  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17-50mm RED Pro Zoom...

Order number. 279056660 not sure what that means. Anyway , can wait to use this baby. I'm using a Vocas 450 and an old Chroziel MB. Love the Vocas.

Online order confirmation numbers are randomly generated, don't put any weight on that if trying to determine queue. Safe to say this is going to be a workhorse lens for a lot of people and the orders are showing the demand for it. As Jarred said, we will fulfill in limited numbers right off the bat and ramp up production throughout the next few weeks.

how many lenses were shipped?

I talked to Matt at Red this evening. He said even though I ordered in the first hour, I am still in the second shipment. So either lots of orders went through ahead of me or Red isn't shipping many lenses in the first group.

First batch that went out was small.. Next group a bit bigger. Metric lenses wont start shipping till first week of June.

Mark, I would figure all the lenses we saw floating around NAB are probably what shipped. Thats fine and what not, but it would have been nice if my account wouldnt have been fully charged for a back ordered lens...never had a business do that to me before...I guess I should be happy Im on the next bit of lenses to come through

Hopefully they will be a bit more informative about things of this nature, not really cool to take someones money for a product no one has their hands on

sure it will be a great lens though once I get it.

None of the lenses at NAB on display were shipped.. I promise. those are still here at the studio. I can't believe you would think we would do something like that :)

And Ryan.. you should not have been charged full price.. just a deposit on a backordered item. contact your rep and they will fix it.

Cool, not trying to be rude or anything, but I will contact my rep... hopefully you can understand my frustration.

hope to be shooting with it soon though... I think Amy Grant would love to take the lenses virginity...ha

Just checked my account, now there are no charges to my account, not even a deposit, does this mean I'm out of line and order again?

I do not know where the confusion is, Ryan. Jarred stated we'd be shipping in limited quantities. The online store says "Shipping in limited quantities". You have the CHOICE to place a deposit on the lens and then pay the balance once you are notified by your rep that it is ready to ship OR pay in full during checkout. We leave it up to the customer.

So, what exactly did we do wrong here? I am pretty sure I even sent you a PM when the lenses went live in the store out of courtesy since you kept posting how anxious you were to order.

Feel free to email me at brent - at - red - dot - com if you want to discuss further.

PS, your order is in. There is some processing time on a credit card company's end between the time we charge and it posts to your credit card.

I don't think there is any way Red would sell those display lenses. I'm sure mine will be along in a week or two. Can't wait.

once again.. We do not sell our display gear.

As I stated, if you remove the rear bellows from the MMB-1, there is the clamp-on ring. On the standard MMB-1 this is 138mm, but there is an optional back which is 143mm, same as the back of the MB20-II. There is enough expansion room in the clamp to fit the 144mm front of the 17-50 zoom, and this has been confirmed to me personally by Jarred. So either the MMB-1 or the MB20-II can be used with the 17-50 if the mattebox is properly configured.

As far as 4x4 filters go, I will need to see a lens in front of me to test to know for sure. It depends on the size of the front element, it's protrusion and the particular design of the lens with its ray traces. Simply no way for me to know at this point.

Hi everyone,

I am looking at using the 17-50 with the S35 and am looking at matteboxes. I come from a video background, some of this is a bit new to me, so I apologize for the basic questions.

For the MMB-1...it clamps on to the lens, correct? Is this as secure as using rods? I shoot primarily by myself (occasionally with an assistant), so I would like to be able to setup the camera as quickly/easily as possible. For this reason, adding rods into the mix just isn't that appealing. The main reason for wanting the mattebox is for ND filters. I think I read in here that the inside threads for this lens was 139mm, but all I can find for screw in filters is 138mm...so I guess the mattebox is the way to go....

Yes, you can use it clamped to the lens. You will need the optional replacement 143mm clamp back. Even though the outer diameter of the 17-50 is 144mm, there is enough expansion room in the mattebox's clamp to fit. There is a lightweight 15mm rod clamp at the base of the mattebox that is removable via two bolts, so you can lessen the weight if you do not plan to mount in this way.

Is there a 143mm back that works with the lmb-5/lmb-15?

No, the largest available clamp back for those matteboxes is 130mm.

The only options from ARRI for 143mm clamp-on are:

- MMB-1 (4x5.65 filters)
- MB20-II (4x5.65, 5.65x5.65)
- LMB-4A (6.6x6.6)

By far the smallest and least expensive option is the MMB-1. I have not eighed to test, but I'm guessing that an MMB-1 with a couple of 4x5.65 filters will be lighter than an LMB-4A with a couple of 6.6x6.6 filters. The LMB-4A is designed to weigh very little, but glass is heavy.
