Ok, I was proven correct. Yes, there are a bunch of new primes at NAB, but the only wide zoom was, like I said, the Angenieux 16-42 (available late June/July). Mind you, great lens, but lists at $21,000, and they don't discount.
The next thing is the re-housed 11-16 Tokina seen elsewhere on reduser for $10,500, which sounds really great, but, when it is available, we have to see how good it is, so, for now, it remains unproven (i am sure the glass is great, we have to wait and see about the re-housing), and, really, it has a different purpose altogether, it's really just for really wide shots. (remember, new things like these usually have bugs that need to be worked out).
Sure, there is the RED 18-50, which is great for the money, but not as good as the proven Century 17-35 (does not hold focus all the way through, i hear).
So, still, if you like to shoot on the shoulder or on a steadycam, the 17-35 is still the best option out there.
Lucky for those of you who might be interested, it is still here. $10,900, from the original $15,000. still new, still unused, and still with a full year manufacturer's warranty (not that it will need it, they have a long history of being durable lenses).
So, if you shoot handheld and want a small, light, dependable, well built and very sharp lens that covers the perfect range for this kind of work, please check this baby out.
Thank you.
