16GB for B16...

What also everyone must realize that the pricing of a CF card doesn't relate only directly to its GB's but to its speed as well and as an example with Sandisk cards the 8GB III is $129 and the 8GB IV is $239, while their 16GB III is only $239 do to the very low writing speed.

What I like to know if Jim or Jarred or any one at RED has tried them on a 1Ds III, not to know if they can handle the burst, if the can handle the hi speeds of RED I'm pretty sure they can handle pretty much anything else you can trow at them, but to know if they are compatible, cause if they are I rater purchase extra RED 16GB and use them on the Canon as well as previously exspressed by excitement.

Ciao

They are compatible...

If the card can handle RED, there's no reason (apart from controller incompatibility quirks) the card wouldn't kick ass in Canon DSLR. The two big issues with getting cards certified with the RED cameras are (obviously) card throughput and the annoying problem of memory controller interfacing. If the controller in the CF card doesn't interface well with the CF controller in the camera, then you're f***ed no matter how good the card is in measured performance. That's why RED went to Lexar and had them tweak their UDMA CF cards for maximum RED performance. Lexar was the only CF OEM who provided a UDMA controller design that seemed to work well with the camera so that's what they went with.

I know and very aware of it, in fact I was asking about compatibility and not performance, with the new 1Ds III those 8GB cards just chow up so dam fast, and forced to stop some times in the best moments of the session, and the 16GB I have tried they just don't cut it, when you shoot burst of high speed shooting.

Any way, after Jim's confirmation, I just ordered Two of them!

Also the first purchase of my new company card, ha!

ciao

Wow, can't believe all the fuss about pricing. Has anyone tallied up the cost of what the equivalent 8 minutes of 35mm film would cost compared to the price of the new 16GB CF cards? Amortize that cost over the lifespan of the CF card. That little CF card will hold hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of imagery in it's humble little life, over and over again. You're not paying for the metal and plastic, you're paying for the function and the engineering, and you're getting a bargain. Besides, you can't compare a P2 card to the Red CF cards because you can't write 4K r3d's to a P2. It will never happen. P2 and Red CF are only partly comparable based on materials and function. That's where the similarities end. Thank you for spending the extra money to make them available to us, Jim.

And that Jeff, is only a small piece of it, to me just the fact of doubling the recording time is warted the money.

EDIT. in photoshoots were you are deep in the water and the girls are all over and so playful the last thing you want to do is stop to reload!!! Now in any of my shoots there are usually no more then two to four on the crew and no more then twelve girls, on a film shoot I can only imagine the number of the crew members and the talent going up so much that just saving those precious few minutes of stop, eject media, reload, formatting the media, restart! No thanks, I'll gladly pay (well actually I already deed) for the bigger cards!

I am a big fan of Red and xxx. I think...

Seriously, thank you for developing these cards, I will be placing my order shortly.

It feels so good to finally have everything coming together... I am loving my camera AND flipping the wigs on suits with the footage.

A big impression is being made in my neck of the woods... Thank you for the Buzz Saw.

Jeff every thime I see you you seem so quite and reserved fellow, but here ...

Hehe. It's just the anxiety over not installing B16 on my camera yet. But I will do so first thing tomorrow morning.

i'm REALLY glad the 16bg are here but i gotta say $550 is a little steep if you ask me... the 8bg are $200, why is it almost three times the price for double the storage capacity? wouldn't $400 or $450 be more appropriate? and since when does RED compare itself to the HVX200/P2 world?
cheers, loving my RED!!

Slacker...

...The deed is done.

Ricardo, you're absolutely right. I think RED should rectify this situation by immediately raising the price on 8GB CF media to $330. Then the 16GB card will indeed be a comparative bargain.

They would love it have it for $400, but as it was said earlier in this thread, RED had to have these specially made to meet the RED's speed requirements. Considering the cheapest I could find the 16GB P2's was $840, I believe $550 is still a pretty good price and not really even close to the P2 price.
