  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

16GB for B16...

I think that there is a gap in people's minds when it comes to consumer culture. A generation of people have paid too little or nothing for movies, music, food, consumer electronics and a host of other products.

This product is a specialty item custom made for the RED camera. When panasonic had the opportunity to sell you a similar product, they charged more than three times more. The P2 could not handle the speed of REDCODE, which is why DVCPRO data rates are so low.

2.5 times the price of an 8 gig card IS COMPLETELY FAIR under all of these circumstances. Customers ASK: JIM MAKES it happen. It could have taken LEXAR two year to develop this. Then there are people in this thread complaining or asking for a $50 discount or outraged by the price.

Guys, we all got a Mercedes for the price of a FORD in the first place. RED is a for profit company, with a staff, facilities and everything that goes with a start up.

Fuck, get off their backs about the price of these things. IT IS CHEAP, if you can't afford it then buy three LEXAR cards from B&H.

Does anyone understand value anymore?

Sheesh!

David

just to clarify about p2 cards - they have a lot more logic in them then just 4 SD cards in a raid. All data is not only written but also verified (I beleive twice) in real time as you are recording. So they actually have quite a bit of bandwidth

point taken. I am not disputing the technology but just making a point that developing these things take R&D time and money.

Jim has most like just produced the fastest CF card in the world. Go buy the best of anything and you might find a large premium attached. IN RED's case they are passing this on to end users at a very fair price.

Thanks for your input.

David

$550 is actually very aggressive pricing considering the small volumes (compared to what guys like lexar and sandisk sell).

And by the way, it was very hard getting the price down to $550 from a much much higher number.

Well I think that's what I was saying. Considering Red had to develop it (or make it develop) and spread the R&D on their relatively small market, it is a very fair price. But big manufacturers could offer them for much lower if they wanted to because they have the tech, the factories and the volume.

I absolutely agree with you... we just couldn't ask our customers to wait for them any longer...

Thanks Jim, I really appreciate it. And now that they're out, we're one step closer to them getting cheaper! :)

Engineering samples have been approved and it will take a few weeks to get them through the production pipeline.

Jim

That's great news Jim, thumbs up!

Just one question which i'm sure everyone will want to know...is there a dreaded backorder going to happen on these things or will there be plenty for all????

And i'm almost over this bloody forum, people just can't stop complaining. I still remember the good ol days when this forum was generally all informative and not 80% noise! I'm sick of it...i think i need a break like you did...but i know i'm an addict and it's to much of an exciting time with RED to let the dickheads ruin it for me.:angry03:

I just ordered up a rack of these. I couldn't be more excited.

I'm amazed at the tempest in a teapot over price.

When you compare to P2 or film or SxS for the EX-1 (sure, go ahead and pay $400 for 8gb there...), it's a bargain. And do P2 or the EX-1 do 2K or 4K? They do not.

If you compare RED to RED, these are $150 more than if you doubled the price of the 8gb. For a specialized, niche technology that required in-house development.

The price will come down eventually. And by RED taking the lead, maybe they kick some 3rd-party manufacturers into a higher gear, doing a favor for us all. So if you wait, you can probably get them cheaper in time, but the opportunity cost of an extra $150 per card seems cheap...

Jeff - Im sorry but that is true - every bit gets written by the P2 controller and then read by the controller to verify - this can occur up to 6 times before the block is marked as bad - that is why the DVCpro codec is 100 Mbs and the card speed is 640 Mbs. And this is where the reliability of the cards come from. This is also where some of the cost is. Speak to a P2 engineer on this one

And yes - so far all P2 cards have 4 SD cards in a raid configuration - that is why the 32 GB card came out just after 8 GB sd cards. They track with each other. Of course anything could be inside the card if it had the logic and speed - but P2 cards are built this way now.

The licensing is done that way to ensure reliability - I am not debating if that is a good or bad decision - but Panasonic can control the tolerances allowed in p2 technology and remove issues with some media being too slow.

Finally - legacy interface - this one always makes me laugh. The cards require a 110 dollar reader to work on (almost) any laptop to bridge to expressbus. Think of all the Decks needed at many thousands of dollars of cost to read "legacy" tapes. You simply have to pick a format at the time of engineering and go with it. Do you think CF cards will never be legacy - of course they will - but you will just need a 10 dollar interface to read your RED media. So no issue there.

First: Thank you Jim for going such strong the CF way! I love it, I love this practical, small CF cards. It´s great to see your effort to build yourself, what we were all waiting for. I think, the market outside the needs of Red One owner, is, and will be happy with already existing speed of actual top CF Cards. You hardly need more then a San Disk Extreme IV or Lexar UDM 300x for a 1DS MK3! Under this point of view and the given security, that they are produced and checked by the Red Company, make in my eyes the price more then fair. I don´t care about the prices in the common computer market, and thank God, Red neither (Just imagine they would. Half of us would not be able to buy Red one). But I care about having the best to store and protect sometimes very hard achieved sequences. Just think twice how many money sometime is involved in front of your lens, how much you spend in Red One, Accessories, Lenses? And then, there, were all this is digitally stored, we start to discuss about $ 50.-/ 100.-/ 200.-
Again, Jim and Team, thank you!
Marc

It all comes down to "fair". We did not get into the CF business because we wanted to. We had to. We created our camera to an open standard so that there would be several purchase options for our customers. But embedded in that expectation is the belief that the "usual suspects" would step up and provide. They have not (yet) so we had to do this ourselves. We are not trying to get rich on this program. We are just trying to provide the service our customers need until the "big guys" get it together. We have priced these "fairly" considering our small quantity purchasing capability.

And what more could one ask of a company? You folks continue to amaze, thanks and keep it up.

You're an A+ class act, Jim.

Thanks for stepping up to the plate and knocking it out of the park when no one else could.

Seriously, 500-600 bucks is great news. I can't wait till the RED RAM comes out but I predict a couple of these and a laptop will take any serious production off spinning disks. Thanks for making this happen.

Red,

Thanks for going the extra mile to provide this solution for us. It was definately above and beyond the call of duty considering everything else that is a priority at Red.

So let me get this straight...RED is now MAKING CF cards (directly or indirectly) and not just getting them OEMd from other companies?

What also everyone must realize that the pricing of a CF card doesn't relate only directly to its GB's but to its speed as well and as an example with Sandisk cards the 8GB III is $129 and the 8GB IV is $239, while their 16GB III is only $239 do to the very low writing speed.

What I like to know if Jim or Jarred or any one at RED has tried them on a 1Ds III, not to know if they can handle the burst, if the can handle the hi speeds of RED I'm pretty sure they can handle pretty much anything else you can trow at them, but to know if they are compatible, cause if they are I rater purchase extra RED 16GB and use them on the Canon as well as previously exspressed by excitement.

Ciao
