Can anyone recommend good 16GB CF Cards for the RED but not made by RED? And is there any disadvantage to the quality and reliability of them?

Thanks.

I am not sure that there is a brand of CF card that is qualified for use with RED. RED had these made especially for use with the camera. NOt all CF's will be able to handle the all speeds and frame sizes with RED.

IE. even some 8GB RED branded CF's can handle the throughport needed for 4K 16x9 HD RC 36.

Stick with the RED drives.

Really? I thought CF cards were more stable and trust worthy than the RAID Drive. I've used the 8GB cards before and had no problems.

Solid state CF cards are more stable and trustworthy than spinning hard drives but they don't have as high a sustained read/write speed. As far as I know, the 16GB compact flash cards purpose built for Red are the only ones in existence that are capable of recording the higher resolution at the higher speeds. You might be able to find some off brands that can make it up to 4k/2:1/24fps/Redcode28... but you would have to buy batches of each brand and model then test them to find the top percentile.

I'm sure that Red has already done this (expensive) testing but they've never divulged their results other than to say that they could find no card that could record up to their standards. It might be helpful for users if they could list the brands that could sustain 3k at 24fps for those who are willing to sacrifice quality for quantity. They could probably sell a ton of 64GB CF cards that were certified to 3k.

The short of it is that if you want to take full advantage of the Red One while using >8 CF cards then Red is the only game in town.

Indeed, after extensive testing of available cards, RED had to build their own cards.

There have been a few reports of people successfully using the Lexar 300x 16gig cards, but they are not officially supported, and there have also been reports of people running into trouble with these. Unless you shoot unimportant, easily re-created footage and charge very little for it, there is no reason for using non-RED 16gig cards.
