  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

16gb CF Help Needed

If you have not already I would try mounting that card on a PC.
If that is successful from there you can copy your data (if necessary) and reformat through the computer to FAT32 and then mount on camera and format.

I've got a faulty CF card that doesn't read on the computer, had to redundead it, but reads on camera... sometimes. is it happening to all of your cards or just one?

Do you have the USB reader or the FW800 reader? They are both called "Professional UDMA".

When I first got the RED 16GB CF cards, I had the Lexar Professional UDMA USB reader and it wouldn't mount the 16GB cards on Mac or PC, but the 8GB cards worked fine. Every other non-RED CF card I had ever tried also worked fine in the USB reader.

Once I upgraded to the Lexar Professional UDMA FW800 reader, everything has worked fine including RED 16GB CF cards. The explanation I heard is that the RED 16GB cards are so blazing fast, most readers can't keep up.

Perhaps this is your issue. Good luck.
 
Same exact problem, but my cheap cf reader used to work. So, in my case, if it was fast enough then, I want to think it still would be.

Cheap CF readers fail often...the Lexar UDMA seems to hold up well and is only about $60-$80 bucks...often cheaper on sale.....The fire wire port seems to be needed for speed on the 16x cards.

I have constantly better results with ultra-cheap no-brand USB readers when it comes to RED 16GB. I know it is illogical, but it's a fact.

I intended on eventually getting a proper CF reader w/ firewire or better yet esata, to solve the my original problem with transfer speed, but now that my cards don't want to mount on my mac or my pc (though they read/write fine in the red) I'm not sure if a faster reader is the solution to my new problem.

My logic is: if the original reader used to work with the RED cf's, but now does not; it can't be the speed or it never would have worked. It does however, read other types of cards without a problem. (they are both multi card readers...) Maybe I bent a pin on both the old cheap one and the new cheap one I just bought...

So...I'll try buying a faster one, and just return it if it doesn't work. Worst case scenario: I rule out speed being an issue. Best case scenario: my logic is wrong and I start editing a music video!

Either way I'll let you guys know what I can figure out for the others with this problem.
 
The Lexar readers can get hot if used heavily or even left plugged in on a hot day. Had to use Ice packs to keep them cool on the last feature I did. Perhaps its just a bad CF card.

Weather is fairly cool here in San Jose, at least at night. It's all 3 16GB cards. They still work in the camera - just not in the readers...
