  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

160 pound catamaran plus 40 knots

I wish I could talk a little swedish. Totally love scandinavia, my wildest dream projects have a future upthere. But this is somehing I have never seen so it is pretty interesting. It feels like you integrated a short documentary into a promo/event film but I don't know the language so it's just images to me.

Pretty funny you have such high grade stuff but still use iMovie with it. Would you mind to share some more tech info on the gear and workflow you used for the production?

Totally love your demoreel btw. It has something mystic...it does stand out from traditional in your face reels. Which are nice too but I did not expect this after the shortfilm.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi, the latest iMovie Trailer Templates are quite corny but can also be fun to try out new material in. Of course FCP was the main editing app. You can cut your material in Pro Res HQ in iMovie. But I am not sure that it preserves 10bit when exporting (even if you choose to export with the source codec). But since you can export directly to FCP as an XML you easily overcome that problem.

PS: I spent three days shooting these boats for an event firm called Speedcats.se – gocart on water. The last day of shooting a food company came to ride the boats as part of their weekend conference. Afterwards they asked if they could buy footage to be shown privately. I put together something quickly for them using the iMovie Trailer Tempaltes. The speedcats.se people liked the trailer segment so much that we decided to use it as part of the reel I was contracted to shoot for them. Their reel aims to demonstrate the gear and the fun rides, as well as introduce speedcats to people who are totally new to the concept. Their motto is that anyone can ride these boats. By the way, when you turn a speedcat 90 degrees it can achive 3,4 Gs.

Amazing! Thanks for the explanation. I think you really succeeded at those aims as you manage to grab the attention of people that do not even understand the language.

Was it all shot from the side of the water or also from on top of the water? That is hard to detect for me cause you managed to keep a lot of variety either way.

Must say I would have loved it even more when you would have a fullspeed pov shot in it and a wide shot in which you would almost feel like being crushed by the boat charging at you. But I understand those kind of shots have their technical limitations. Especially with water you're just not always able to get everyting you want in certain projects which frustrates me as an operator sometimes;). Still nice piece of action offcourse.

I have some cool full speed shots, where you really feel how fast these boats go. Also Mårten Björnsson from speedcats.se have tons of footage that was shot from his GoPro HD cameras, which are mounted all over his boats. He's been kite surfing in S.A. for the past three months. Once we get our stuff together we'll post a hardcore action version.

Otherwise I shot out on a bigger racing cat as well as standing far out in the water with a tripod. You can really get some amazing HD footage when you apply stabilisation filters on bumpy 2K or 4K material. Besides that, my RED ONE & Birger Canon FF combo is great for tracking fast moving objects. I have equal high hopes for Epic and RED's Canon FF.

Super awsome. Stoked to watch that. Yeah I like birger mount also on R1mx so on epic it should be insanely cool feature and make it really easy to work with in cine-efp-style. Kitesurfing in South Africa, well he can scrape another dream of the list then:D

It would be interesting indeed to learn more about RED:s Epic/Canon FF program. Seen a few posts here and there but that was some time ago. Maybe you or somebody else knows more?
