  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

16 or 32 cores w/Windows Server 2003

Starting to get into secret sauce area here, I don't mind discussing it offlist though shoot me an email at j e f f @thecamerahouse.com and we can keep up the conversation (jeff doesn't really have any spaces damn the spam).

Please JEFF & MARK after you discuss whatever you reach please don't let
it as a secret sauce please share us you valuable results

Its not so much secret sauce as it is where we go next to get the best film outs/ DCI packs possible with fastest speeds. Honestly I'm starting to get a little bit wary of posting too much on open forums because a lot this should be directly communicated with Red, Scratch, other major post houses and vendors. This is knowledge hard fought for and a lot of money paid for. I don't mind sharing it, if the goal is to get a place like off hollywoods on the best track, as being part of an organization on the east coast that I can refer my clients to (because I'm just off sunset).

Jeff - I'll email you after the holidays - maybe visit - in LA first week on Jan for meetings and a shoot - thanks - I am looking for a strategic partner on the West Coast - especially on the DCI packs side. Have a great New Year!!

Just out of curiosity has anyone tried a Geforce SLI configuration yet? Maybe instead of an APEXX 32 core system you want a 4x8800 SLI setup. Is the GPU the bottleneck or the processors?

I came across SNS a while ago.. pretty impressive results.

Out of interest what arrays (FC) are people using ?

They are the FASTEST 4G fibre HBA's we tested. And we tested all the usual suspects. We will use them exclusively in our new facility.

Storage

Storage

Render farms are a great low cost solution for processing large files, Jeff have you set-up a render farm for RedCode Yet? If so how are the results?

On the storage side of things..............

I purchased one 24D,(24TB) Fiber Channel TerraBlock from Facilis in 2006 for the HD movie “Dale, the Dale Earnhardt story released in 2007.
The storage preformed very well with HD at 1:1 and real time streaming to the Avid Adrenaline Media Composer. Most if the footage was shot at 135 Mbps with a Sony F900.
It was the best price point at the time. I saw the storage at a demo working with an Avid & Mac at the same time. Facilis also offers a SAN solution for smaller budgets.

Here is the link for the press release from Facilis in 2005.

Did you look at:
http://www.4bright.com/

also for Render Farm storage:
http://www.isilon.com/index.php

Yes, but i was just talking HBAs - not storage.

Last time I looked at Bright I was very impressed, it's a 100% OEM with thier own software - too expensive in my opinion for what you get.

Isilon is also expensive, however, my reseller and mentor is is telling me great stuff - I will look a bit closer at Isilon. Is that what you are running on?

Not yet, I am looking at adding both systems in Feb 08.

Currently we are using these solutions:
http://www.apacesystems.com/

Not the best marketing skills, but their hardware is rock solid, and very reasonably priced. Since we installed the system over 2 years ago, we have had zero issues.
But its time to move up to 4GB fiber...we wired the facility w/ fiber when I built it 6 years ago.

My understanding of ISILON is that although it has huge collective potential - a single transaction on a single port max at 90mbs. Yikes.

PS- post 1000

I am scratching my head a bit at 37% on 16 cores with that disc speed and the 4500 card.

Me too, especially if this was when rendering (full high quality). The debayer should scale quite well over the CPU's.

Jeff: which version of redcine? The latest versions have had some improvements in CPU usage.

I will also be working on threading optimizations for a big part of '08, so it can only get better ;)

there you go Mark i fixed that for you..

It was the latest version as of two weeks ago. Just got back from holiday...ahh fun in vegas. So I'll be back at it this week.

How is Windows Server 2003 with handling 16+ cores in general?

It works but you must be running one of the specialized variants of the OS that supports that many processors. Performance varies with application obviously but different versions have different capabilities and features depending on their intended use. You definitely can't use the vanilla version of Server 03 that can be bought almost anywhere as it doesn't support that many CPUs. We use a mixture of flavors here from the bottom end OEM version of 03 to the Data Center version. Server 08 is right around the corner but we're not going to upgrade until we have a need (or we are forced) to migrate to Vista which is what Server 08 is intended to support.

Can Windows XP Pro (workstation, not server) support multi-cores? I know it handles multi processors but didn't know if it would recognize a quad-core processor.

I have about $2000 to build an on-set data wrangling station for an upcoming feature in February.

Yes, as long as you don't go over two physicial processors you can have as many cores as you want.
