Just had a call from a friend on set, stuck as one of the 16 G CF Cards will not mount. The card was unmounted to off load, prior to that the shots had been checked on camera replay and all was well. The computer will not see the card ( 3 readers tried) and the camera will not also. Tried reboots etc.
Anyone seen this before or have any tips. Would help a very nervous DIT and client.
Support call to RED has been made but someone somewhere in the world that is awake may have come across this problem.

Thanks

A problem I had with one 16GB card was once you shot on it and then removed/unmounted the card, the camera would not recognise it again if you put it back in the camera (until you reformatted the card again). I was able to backup to a Nexto drive thou. Red replaced the card.

Does anyone know the warranty conditions for CF cards?
I had an 8GB one die on first use. Red asked me to send it in.
I did.
I just got it sent back to me, with the rep saying it's out of warranty.
No indication given of why, and I've since asked for an explanation. None given.
Card was only about 8 months old when reported to Red...

Mark,
Unfortunately its 90 days. See here...http://www.red.com/terms/

6a. Standard Warranty – A Standard Warranty is granted to the original purchaser for a period of one (1) year, parts and labor, for the camera and camera accessories excluding Digital Media and Batteries. Standard Warranty for Digital Media is ninety (90) days. ..............

The problem...even Mac or PC cannot detect anything. Normally if something connected to the computer. We can see from disk utility or computer management from PC. The thing is...none is detected like nothing being attach. How're you going to retrieve it if you cannot see anything at all ? If someone has any idea..please share. I'm trying to help my friend here as well..

Regards

but replacing the card is a different issue. The issue now is how do we retrieve files from the card.

Ok Guys

Here's an update from my friend, the end result is "RESHOOT"! it's frustrating...

I was thinking about it overnight, every went fine..camera shut down..pull the card out..plugin to the reader and poofff...nothing happen. Not even Disk Management or Disk utility or Recovery software detects it...none like nothing being attach..PC or Mac..same

There're 2 or 3 possibilities..impossible for us to check which one
1. 16GB Card itself is faulty
2. The CF Module caused or burned the card (very unlikely...)
3. The SANdisk FW800 damage the card during the insert to the laptop.

We feel very bad over this situation and i hope this will be the last time happen. But if there's any possible closest speculation on why this happen...i'm all ears..i'm very curious

Doesn't matter how it might of happened, my guess is the CF was flakey.
Sure if others blow the finger may point back to your reader/s.
When my 16gb went, the camera or sandisk usb wouldn't read it..only the Nexto.
Reformatting and then recording was fine until you wanted to playback or continue to record in camera after you'd unmounted it.
Exhibited a lot of crazy symptoms when you tried to access it after unmounting. Red replaced it under warranty. Be interesting to know their failure rate. Check backup before striking.

Guess the card too instead of the reader...but my friend didnt even has the chance to do backup.

As much as we're saying hard drive isnt safe. I guess solid state media did has some weakness as well.

Hello David,

I've just had the same problem. I reported to Red. I am not sure whether it is a default card or a bug in built 17. I was having exactly the same problem. I was able to see the files on the camera, and as soon as I unmounted, if I placed it back to the camera It said unformatted and also wouldn't mount on my card reader. But I formatted in disk utility, then in camera, and now it seems to work fine. But to be honest, I don;t want to use it on set.

But it is good to know that nexto works. I didn't think about that. Thanks for the tip.

Ivan

A little off-topic -- our Nexto will not read our new 16GB cards. Can I ask what model you are using? It reads our 8GB cards just fine.

16gb cf cards

16gb cf cards

Today we will send the cf card back to red. We re-shot the scenes that we ve lost with a lot of pain and overtime. Next shooting we used the other cf cards with success always having in mind that they might not mount again. It is getting stressful shooting with the red on high end jobs. If you have experienced once the problem you just have to keep in mind that it might not work.... So, we "check our gate" cross our fingers and never fill up the 16gb cards... actually we use them as 8gb at the end...

yeah panos, one of the reason why i didnt take my 16GB cards delivery yet. It works well on 8GB at the moment. Data security is most important than anything else.

I receive a news again today that 2nd CF16 GB brokedown and exactly same thing happening. This is crazy....we have no idea what is happening now. Is it really the reader ? or card itself ? It's too soon to pinpoint but it's either those two..,

We need some serious attention into this, happened on commercial shoot ! If it's not reliable we gotta throw away the card or the reader and never use it again ever.

the cards was belong to Panos. I believe he is on set right now struggling with this problem. I wanted to help him but the computer didnt detect anything at all, exactly the same thing happening in the beginning and this is the 2nd time. He is using SANDISK FW800..

edit : no, it's not the same card like in the beginning of the thread. This is the 2nd card now

Me too...

Me too...

Hate to add a "me too" post, but it looks like we've been bitten with this same problem on two of our 16 Gb cards. Cards format in camera. We shoot once with them, card dies (not readable by camera or computers).

I contacted RED today to look at RMAs.
