This kid in Spain PM'd me at Vimeo to introduce himself. Imagine my surprise when I clicked on this video:

He has no timelapse or video experience at all, and only very basic equipment - an old Canon 30D. I think I have found my new apprentice.

I shall call him Darth Nilo.

Woaah. that was incredible.

I think I know what my next hobby is. ;)

Impressive. Most impressive.

Tom be careful that the apprentice doesn't teach the Master!

"The circle is now complete..."

Maybe I will meet my fate like the Emperor and die in a blaze of blue lightning at the hands of my former apprentice.

Woah...where'd you get that smiley?!! Can we add that to the RedUser list [might get over-used of course]?

Loved the music,,

EDIT: ...and the photography of course. But, the music too :)

Impressive. Great work . My boy (also a Tribal member of the Tribe) has been shooting with the RED since last year now he is 15. These two kids should get together.. Perhaps Sundance bound? - his first film has been submitted at the indigenous/native american section of the Sundance Film Festival.

I would love to see more of this kids work from the other side of the world!

That was some really nice timelapse for someone starting out. I did see quite a few hot pixels in those starlapse sequences. Makes me realize the difference between the 30D and the 5D2.

I also find it interesting that depending on where the timelapser learns his art determines the style in which he/she shoots...or at least the subject manner. I started doing my shots in LA so my strength is in cityscapes. Where as Tom started doing timelapse of stars and from what I've seen his strength is there. Now that's not to say that either one of us could just switch subjects and be lost. But I do believe there is a style that is carried over and something that one looks for in a shot.

That was very good.

Interesting version of Fade to Black too.

Yeah! I didn't recognize it at first. (ah yeah Apocalyptico, no wonder.)

What a good eye Nilo has! He's out there with his camera, getting it done. What an inspiration.

Hey Tom, you ever think about doing some kind of Timelapse tutorial or masterclass?

Hey Tom, you ever think about doing some kind of Timelapse tutorial or masterclass?

I'm planning to put a boatload of behind-the-scenes clips and quasi-tutorials on the Bluray of my first film "These Short Days." I'm trying to really go out of my way to shoot a bunch of that kind of stuff. The reason is, because when I used to watch the BARAKA DVD, I always felt disappointed that the BTS movie was only like 15 minutes long. I had seen the movie, but now I really wanted to know HOW they did it.

Tom, what do you mean he has no timelapse.... experience....?
Have you checked out his website? he has as much energy as the sun.
and he has an eye-- young, but probing and delicate at times. He makes connections between micro and the bigger, more obvious themes. He has a lot of music in him. The best thing anyone could do for this kid is to buy him a camera and leave him alone- or offer to carry his bags. Even then, that might interfere with his grand experiment.

Well if it works out for him to visit the US and spend a couple weeks helping with my movie next year, that's pretty much my plan. Just turn him loose with a camera and a can of bear spray.

One thing about timelapse, though, is that there is quite a bit of trial and error. One of the main reasons I made the Timescapes forum was so noobs wouldn't have to keep reinventing the wheel. Darth Nilo still needs to learn the ways of RAW timelapse shooting, motion control, etc. :)

RAW timelapse shooting is the only way to go. Sure the files are massive coming off of the 5D2 but jpeg has way too many problems in it that can surface in an image sequence. Banding and weird artifacts are at the top of the list.

Well, I thought I should update this thread. As those of you who follow on twitter and my blog may know, Nilo did in fact come to the States for a 3-month internship with me on "TimeScapes." And it turned out awesome. He's super talented, and a great kid. I would not be surprised at all if Nilo becomes an Oscar-winning DP some day.

The media in Spain took interest in the story of Nilo traveling here to work on my film: http://www.rtve.es/noticias/20101121/maestro-fotografia-naturaleza-con-solo-anos/372829.shtml

Nilo is back in Spain, and already teaching big workshops on timelapse:

If any of you Red shooters in Spain could use an assistant on shoots, please consider reaching out to Nilo. He's a super hard worker and learns fast.
