Over the past year I've been working on a NOVA with a production company that hasn't used RED yet. The last time I worked with them I suggested if any new projects come up they may like to look at RED.

They called me last week to work on the last day of production for the current project which were some recreation scenarios. And they suggested we use the RED. I had a conference call with them and afterwards it was a go. I set up my team, audio, gaffer and our own Steve Sherrick to DIT (Steve lives not too far from where we were recording). And then I headed off to a job I had in Jamaica.

When I returned on Tuesday night (production day is Thursday) I had a frantic email basically stating that they had cold feet and wanted to use the F900 that we'd been using for the whole project. So I got the F900 and cancelled Steve (bummer).

Then they decided that the one slo-mo shot we were to do could be done at 120 frames (2K) on the RED and they could get a bit of experience at least playing with one shot (of course I agreed!).

We set up the shot and it went flawlessly and looked great. I'm sure now that this client will use the camera again. I can't post any video until after this NOVA airs (November). But following are a few stills from the set. This was fast and dirty. We only had 2 hours for set up, record, and breakdown. We were recording in the producers garage. BTW, Steve showed up...thanks Steve!

The recreation is the smashing of an idol 4500 years ago in a burning temple. Here's how we set it up. We were in an open garage. The backdrop was a set flat that looked like a stone wall. The idol was secured to a cloth covered table. We only had three idols (about 14 inches tall)...thus only three attempts. We keyed the idol with an HMI (Joker 800). Then we used two 650 fresnels and a 1000 fresnel gelled with red, yellow and orange strips attached to a flicker box to create the room on fire effect. Along with that we had a fog machine to pump in smoke. And the final gag was using a firestarter square in a cartollini being held on a c stand to create flames in front of the lens. Old school but very effective. The shot looked great and everyone was happy.

Thanks for the informative writeup and photos! Very interesting to see. I wish I had a garage that big.

Hey! you are shooting the pick up for my show. It better not suck ;-) Ok, I re red your post, and I guess I worked on your show. Nice work, it's a good looking show.

Was a fun shoot in Israel. Gary should have called and asked me, I would have talked him into shooting on Red.

Looks good.
Cheers,

Nick

Ah, somehow the first photo made the space seem larger. I know flames can be challenging subject, did you use an IR filter or was that not needed?

Hey Nick, small world!! Gary was pro RED...I think it was more on the post side that there was some trepidation. They all seemed pretty happy at the end of the day. I'll find out next week how things worked out for them with the R3D files.

jbeale, no I didn't use an IR and it wasn't necessary in this kind of situation. Yes, I didn't want to get the flames too close to the lens. There was a lot of heat coming off of that firestarter. It actually created a great heatwave effect in the final shot.

Question for you... how did you power your external servo lens control? Do you have a Fuji to RED cable adapter? If so, where did you get it? Does it also do start/stop? Which port is it coming from?

Just wondering... thanks.

NOVA rocks!

Wes Printz (Pana-Tech on this board) made the Fujinon to RED cable for me using very high quality connectors and cable. It does have start/stop. It comes out of the aux 232 port under the viewfinder and monitor ports. RED is supposed to make this cable at some point but I'm very happy with the cable I got from Wes.

I happened to see this blurb in todays Boston Globe. This doc, which isn't even finished yet is already getting attention.

An upcoming "Nova" show on the Bible is drawing fire from the American Family Association, a conservative Christian organization based in Mississippi. AFA founder Don Wildmon and his followers apparently read a story in the Orlando Sentinel about "The Bible's Buried Secrets," scheduled to air Nov. 18, and fired off an "action alert" to members, urging them to lobby Congress to pull PBS funding. (The Sentinel reporter saw a clip of the film at the Television Critics Association in LA last month.) Angry AFA-ers have swamped PBS with e-mail, causing ombudsman Michael Getler to respond, if reluctantly. "I don't write about (PBS programs) before they air, and when I do it is based on observations by viewers who have actually seen the program," Getler posted on the PBS website. Wildmon couldn't be reached yesterday, but according to his petition, he takes issue with statements by experts in the film who say the Old Testament was written in the sixth century BC by hundreds of authors and that monotheism was a process that took hundreds of years. "Nova" senior executive producer Paula Apsell said yesterday she was surprised at the early backlash. "None of these people have seen the program yet. The program isn't done." "Nova," produced by WGBH, planned to post the four-minute clip seen by reporters on its website yesterday. Apsell said the two-hour documentary draws from biblical scholarship, archeology, and literary analysis. She's never happy when anyone attacks PBS, Apsell said, but "I don't believe it's going to get much traction. I think when people watch the program they'll find it much less fearsome than they expected."

Here's the link to the preview.

There are no RED shots in the preview (that I know of). I did hear from the producer today who wrote about the RED footage we recorded last week, "The footage looks great!".

This was a fun shoot. I'm pleased to announce that Ken and I have both had our cameras placed within inches of flames and the cameras/lenses have come out unscathed. And for the record, the camera did not shut down to heat :-)

Ken is an accomplished DP and a lot of fun to work with. I enjoyed the shoot, and hopefully this experience with the Red will make them consider it for even more shoots in the future.
