  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

128 gb CF cards

You probably already heard about it, but look at Red Mags and their transfer speeds which are WAY higher than CFs.

They are already shipping: http://www.red.com/store/media

Also take a look at this thread: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=53431

If I remember correctly Red is done developing CFs, and if they are not Red CF's they will be limited by the camera to lower framerates for safety. Nobody wants people losing footage because the card was only "fast enough".

We will test them when we can get our hands on them... not holding our breath though :)

Unfortunately you need to throw the specs out the window until the cards are fully tested over months. What we have seen is that companies tend to be very liberal with their write speed specs. If a card can hit a certain number, that is the spec. It does not necessarily mean that the whole card can sustain that speed. In fact, typically they don't. We found this out the hard way.

This card is priced similarly to our new SSD 128GB card, which is proven to hold much better specs for the entire card. You can easily record one take on the RED SSD and not worry.

My concern is, will the standard downloading devices get too hot downloading and possibly give issues similar to what we may see when downloading 4,5,6 16gb cards back to back on a NON RED card reader.

I opt for the SSD drives myself just sounds more secure and faster.

Only reason i'm at all interested in CF cards is a mention I saw about the scarlet still coming with the CF card reader as a standard feature. Not sure how similar the recording times will be compared to a Red One but i'd rather shoot on solid-state media than going to something like a red-drive.

If prices are similar, SSD is definitely the way to go. The only thing that is bugging me is the price of the SSD module.

The only thing that is bugging me is the price of the SSD module.

Final price for the Side SSD module hasn't been listed yet. It will be less than the $2500 price listed earlier. Also, if you order the SSD instead of the standard CF, you get to subtract the price of the CF. For instance, if the SSD is $1500 and the CF is $500, you only pay $1000 extra to get the SSD in place of the CF.

Seems to me that the more RED can refine and simplify the product line to focus on just the components that work best the more likely they will realize economies of scale and lower management costs that bring prices down.

Extremely difficult to be excited over these announced CF cards, let alone just interested, given the poor performance of their <cough>90MB/s</cough> 32GB & 64GB cards.... Just sayin'

...What's the * right after the "100MB/s" for? ...right.

yeh, getting excited over a card that will hit 100 mb a second, for 2 seconds is totally underwhelming... great for still photographers though, especially for medium format shooting. I think that's the actual target market...

but honestly I would much rather get more cards and have less on 1 single card. These things DO burn out...

64CF card

64CF card

If I recall my memory correct then it should be true that RED has tested a working 64CF card for good. We heard no more about it because the new SSDs came up. But still for some people this 64CF card would be maybe an interesting option – bring it on
