  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

120FPS 1K, Broadcast Standards, Framerate Conversion and PAL

What cameras can currently handle 120fps ? (other than Phantom/high speed cameras and regardless of resolution)

The Sony FS100 more or less can. I can't remember if its 120fps or 240. But its also sub HD, just like the $10-15k Scarlet. Go figure...

If a firmware update can enable 120fps in an HD res on Scarlet then I'll buy it. Until then the FS100 is my go to camera for the work I'm doing.

Are you sure? I had a feeling this only shot up to 60fps.

It's got a burst-speed button that is substantially over 100fps (at 480p, I think).

What does the FS100 shoot on? CF? The only reason I don't like the FS100 is the 420, 8bit-ness, and low bitrate (24mbits, right?) I mean, the C300 at least has 422 50mbit (still 8bit though). There is that certain threshold where you can pull out a hell of a lot more info and 422/50mbit is that combo (for me.) Even still, the FS100 is definitely the right price, which is pretty damn important to independents.

The fs100 shoots at 120fps on SD , sdxc and memory stick procards only
I thought of selling mine to buy more Scarlet accessories but finally I'm definitely keeping it . Not only because its probably more "handy" than a scarlet in some situation but also for the slow motion and its great performance in low light .
here are a few shots examples in slow motion
http://vimeo.com/34202545 password: fs100

Keeping in mind that its better to set this camera right rather than color correct your shots too much, its not easy to get a one for all (or many) situations "picture profiles" you might like . However the profile settings that might seem difficult to handle give a lot of possibilities.

very sad.
no 120 fps at 3k as announced 3 years.
no 120 fps at 2k
no 120 fps at 1 k
as today. i just reflect what i'm reading in different posts.

but the tech specs on the red.com site tells us:
1k 120fps

i have asked many times for getting r3d files but never seen any.

and:
much cheaper cameras are doing 720/60p, hopefully red enables at least 720/60p one day...

i personally wish the firmware modified to shoot 1080p 96fps one day.

until this happens, scarlet-x is the perfect workhorse for shooting 4k 25p RAW. not more not less. and this solution is available for a sensational price. there is nothing to compare with.

Would it possible, at 2k or 3k to implement a burst speed for the Scarlet just like the Sony Z7? It buffers 3/6/9 seconds and converts them into 12/24/36 seconds. It takes time to "render" but it works.

At 848x480 the GoPro2 shoots 120fps... heavily compressed, but pretty cool for web applications.

If you haven't seen it, there's an interesting site/video of how to best use twixtor here:

http://philipbloom.net/2011/09/13/twixtor/

I have to say I've tried using twixtor and have analysed what other people have done with it, but almost every time I've seen either moire and or a morphing effect on fast motion, which for broadcast makes it a bit dubious in my eyes. But the video there looks very impressive from what I can see. If you have a controlled subject then it sounds like it can work. My problem is my primary subject is birds in flight. Not very controllable. When my Scarlet arrives I'm going to do some experiments shooting birds in flight with just sky as b/g at 240 shutter speed and then try twixtor experiments to get to 120fps. If it could work, which I have a feeling it won't with birds, then perhaps this is a better way to go as it means you can use 2k footage. I'll post my findings, but I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had any success with moire/morphing free shots. I wish I'd been able to afford the Epic. It would have been so much easier!
