Got an SMS today from Gunleik, wondering if I would be interested in doing a little test with Eirik's Epic. Turned out that I was.
Here a few impressions:
Beautifully machined, solid built. This camera will still work when the RED Gozilla™ 256 terrapixel camera ships.
The boot up time is great. Not instant on, but very, very workable. This is a camera I will comfortably take along for ENG or documentary work. Turn it on as you take it out of the bag, by the time you have it on your shoulder or the tripod, it should be ready to shoot.
The menu is a breeze - if you can handle an iPhone, you'll be so fine. Changes can be done so much quicker. (I have only very briefly glanced at the manual a couple of months ago.) When going for higher frame-rates, you get the option of increasing the compression accordingly.
The side grip is perfect - once the small batteries are shipping, this will be very workable. (Twice while shooting a tight car interior test, I accidentally bumped a button that unmounted the SSD magazine. I imagine that this function can be turned off.)
I love the many places where you can start running the camera; in whatever awkward position you may find yourself in. (And you can no longer accidentally turn off the camera by pushing the wrong red button.)
When the battery runs low, the warning signal is confusing. I'm sure this will change by the time the X versions ship.
The titan mount is gorgeous - you can operate the 300mm without any worries for an extra support. "Wahnsinn", as we Germans would say.
As others have noted before, in standby the camera is noisier than the R1, but more silent while running.
Those SSD magazines are tiny!
The REDMote is surprizingly light, and a bit smaller than it appeared from the pictures. Lovely display. Didn't spend time playing around with it.
We ran a couple of tests, but I'm sure that Mr. Groven will post those when he has crunched his way through them. Like he said, I am the camerman
Bottom line: you feel and see that this is a completely re-worked camera, where every department has put a lot of thinking (and input from us users) and produced something amazing. I am glad I went for stage 2, and the wait is so going to be worth it.
Thanks to Gunleik for taking me along, and thanks to Eirik for redecorating and thus giving us this great chance. And thanks to both Gunleik's and my kids for great, great patience with their geeky camera-dads.
