  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any news on when the Scarlet will get the 120 fps?

I apologize if there is already something about this somewhere else but I can't find anything on it.

It's practically SD and super cropped, so I'm not so sure it will ever happen.

For what it is worth to any RED decision makers listening in, our company bought the Scarlet with 1k @ 120fps as a prime reason to have the camera. Yes, if you try to use 1k in a 1080 show full frame, it would look very bad and unprofessional. However, in the nature documentrary series that we are now producing, having 120fps in the multi-pannel sequences with lots of moving animals is exactly what the producer ordered. I do trust that RED will give users one more creative option in the Scarlet tool kit and include 1k @ 120fps soon.

Exactly what I was planning on using it for, multi-pane sequences. Could look quite amazing if used correctly.

I'm sure it will be enabled. It's been advertised and is in the technical specs. People are ordering the camera based on these specs. Things change sure, but I hardly think folks would be willing to accept payment and ship cameras based on features they didn't intend to honor or possibly exceed.

I really hope that it is delayed because RED folks are trying to find a way to enable 120fps not in 1K but in 2K, cause the whole 1K concept is the opposite of digital cinema philosophy, this resolution is not high enough.

Yes, 120fps was one of the biggest things about the camera when I bought it too. 2k 120fps would be absolutely amazing, 1.5k 96fps would also be stunning, but I'll work round the low resolution constraints of 1k if it means doubling the framerate. The Epic is leaps ahead in terms of high framerates/resolution so it wouldn't impact on their high end market and it would give the Scarlet a real edge over its main competitors. Personally, if I had the choice of a 2K 120fps camera or a 4K 60fps I'd buy the 2K camera any day. 4K is great, but for the next few years for television we're only likely to be delivering 2K. Higher resolutions do add to a production, but for many of us higher framerates add a lot more.

If they found a way to somehow squeeze this level of performance out the Scarlet's hardware, even with a greater degree of compression then it would add a TON of utility to what is already an incredible package. I think it's extremely unlikely that we'll see this kind of change until the Dragon sensor update comes, but I do think there is a real chance that with the necessary hardware upgrade we will see some maximum frame rate bumps. Maybe I'm being optimistic though.

Again I would kill to have 1.5K at 96 fps. It fits into the scheme of RED's choosen frame rates, and it would be slightly bigger than 720p. It would be a usable resolution, plus it be a great comparision against the competition for marketing purposes. (Plus it would fit my personal needs for webwork!)

The original Red One did 120 fps at 2k, so I have to imagine the Scarlet's newer hardware is far more than capable of handling those frame rates. I'm not an engineer, but if the Scarlet's hardware was originally developed for the Epic but just didn't pass muster, I wouldn't be surprised if it could even handle 4k 60fps. Hopefully we'll see some more options in the near future.

Is it me or is it funny that my GoPro does 120fps at a higher resolution...

I have the gopro2 and the dimensions are WVGA: 848×480 at 120FPS (only 30 in 1080), where I believe scarlet 1k is somewhere around 1024 x 576.

I was just going to bring up the point about the RED ONE frame rates. I feel like the Scarlet may actually Match/exceed the RED ONE's frame rate capabilities eventually, and maybe before the dragon upgrade.

It's possible that on some level Red has an interest in giving the Red One certain capabilities that the Scarlet does not possess. Do not mistake what I am saying, the Scarlet has a tremendous feature set and is great value for money for a wide range of reasons, but the cost of a shootable Red One package is still higher than that of a shootable Scarlet package (provided we are talking about new orders of course, after market is a different matter as there are some great Red One packages for sale used at a tremendous value). The Scarlet has a lot of advantages over the Red One (small form factor, access to the same accessories as Epic, HDRx, 5k stills, access to the Dragon sensor upgrade in the future... the list goes on...), but there's probably some value to Red in having the Red One maintain advantages in some areas (4.5k mode and 120fps in 2k mode being the biggest ones).

I think there is a very real possibility that the Dragon upgrade brings the cost of a new upgraded Scarlet to par or past the cost of a Red One. Combine that new cost with the increased horsepower under the hood (the non-sensor part of the upgrade, I would assume) and I wouldn't be shocked to see higher frame rates at all current resolutions on the Scarlet. Probably not as high as Epic's current frame rates, but 5k motion, 4k slow motion/HDRx, 3k at pretty high frame rates (60fps? 72fps?) and 2k at still higher frame rates (120fps?) seems like a real possibility to me.
