  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

120 FPS at 2k and HDR at 4K?

Will scarlet-x eventually get 120fps at 2K resolution through firmware updates? 1K isn't really usable, except for webcontent....
And is there any chance we'll be seeing HDR at 4K 24fps? I saw some posts about Red working on this...

I think at the moment there are plenty of 'Couldn't it theoretically do this...' questions about the Scarlet X (the most golden of them is 24p@5k ) but in essence, nobody knows...

Jim has already suggested tht the tech in the Scarlet is already being pushed to the max, and there seems to be a delicate balancing act of resolution, compression, frame rate (and probably a lot more)

Over time there will probably be firmware updates to get more out, but I dont think the expectations should be too high for anything more fantastical than what the Scarlet X already is is.... A solid 4k Raw digital cinema camera that seems to kick the ass out of the competitors (my Scarlet is still on the 'to be delivered' list, so its an assumption - I might find that it only shoots 1080p, but then I hear thats good enough ;-) )

The beauty of Scarlet is if you really need those features you could rent an EPIC brain for the specific shot you need. I wouldn't count on any of those features because what Gary said about the hardware being pushed to the max, and the fact that RED is going to want to save those features exclusively for the EPIC to keep it the high end system it is.

Working for a company that has two EPICs, I'm still in awe of what the Scarlet delivers at its price point.

I don't even believe 120fps at 1k is currently enabled on shipping Scarlets. No one has been able to confirm it, and it's not in the operations guide.

I would not bet on any additional "features" and buy it based on the currently listed specs only.

I agree. It seems like the biggest problem with the Scarlet is that people want it to be the Epic with a 7D price. People create rumors and theory's about what the Scarlet is or will be or could be. This raises people's expectations to an unreasonable level and they decide hey I'm going to get a Scarlet because sometime in the future it will be able to shoot a million fps at 5k and cure cancer and AIDS.

I know I sound like a grumpy old man, but the Scarlet is what it is. I wouldn't count on it changing. If you are debating on buying one, base that decision on what the camera can do now and be pleasantly surprised if one day it can shoot 24fps in 5K or some other dream feature. There is nothing wrong with stating your wish list of future improvements, but don't be disappointed if the Hardware of the camera makes in impossible.

So to answer the question I doubt the Scarlet will be able to do 120fps in 2K any time soon.

I don't think it's unrealistic. Assuming they can enable 4K 24fps HDR, in theory would mean that higher FPS is possible across the entire resolution range.
I'm not asking for a phantom gold for the price of handycam

I sure hope Red isn't going protect Red One's market incase they do get HDR working in 4K at the proper FPS.
"no compromises!" or whatever it was a few years back. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I also noticed there was nothing in the manual that stated frame rates beyond 60fps. I'll be able to test that this weekend when my accessories show up tomorrow. The original Scarlet Fixed shot 120 at 3K. What happened to that?

They said 4k HDRx will be done by a changing how the HDRx-stream will be compressed and saved. It will probably consume less power and space that way. Its not the same as shooting 48fps 4k or 24fps HDRx 4k with the current implementation.

Will there be HDRx at 25 fps? Otherwise the entire PAL-part of the world will not be happy :(

I didn't mean to suggest you where asking for something ridiculous in terms for price and capabilities but there are some people who are. I just think people have it in there heads that the features of the Scarlet are what they are to protect the RED MX market or that the firmware is all that is restricting the Scarlet's frame rates. The real issue is the hardware and the data rates that it can handle and if they were trying to protect the RED MX's market they wouldn't have even released the Epic and Scarlet. If they ever do manage to increase the frame rates i have a feeling that you will be shooting at something like 18:1 or even more compressed to do it.

My wish list for the Scarlet are as follows:
*Audio on playback.
*A clean lookless feed out of the HD-SDI or HDMI while my look is applied to touchscreen or EVF. Better yet Clean lookless out HDMI with apllied look out the HD-SDI.
*A way to remotely power up and down the camera.
*HDRx for 24fps 4K
*Longer intervals for time-lapse.

+1 on Audio playback. Audio on playback is clearly in the works. Playback was just released in reality.

We also know they are tinkering with that 4k HDRx 24fps feature.

I'd bet a remote way to power up and down is in the works and certainly possible.

In terms of added support for higher frame rates at specific resolutions, I don't think we'll see much activity on this until the end of the 1st quarter next year. That is, if it's even possible. We just don't know. I believe slight increases are possible, but major increases are not likely without a hardware upgrade.

We also don't know exactly what Dragon will do exactly. It's still far away, but we can probably safely bet on increased dynamic range and improved high ISO performance. However, imagine if that sensor provides an increase in capture resolution or even enables 5k @ 24fps or more on Scarlet as there has already talk about additional hardware needing to be replaced. We just don't know yet.

I assume 24fps HDRx@4k may be a possibility with firmware upgrade, but as for 120fps@2k, i think that will only be possible with the Dragon upgrade

As for myself these are the 2 things i would like to see in the future, and i don't mind paying up to $8000 for the pleasure
