Good morning friends!
someone could tell me if filming with scarlet in 1080 the dynamic range of 13.5 stops keeps.
from already thank you!!

Short answer - YES.

However...

Your best bet if you want 1080 output is to shoot 4KHD (not 4K) and downscale in post - either in RCX or your NLE - to the 1080 output. You'll also get great results shooting 4KHD and then capture / record with an external device like the Samurai / Ninja (?)
Filming & recording in camera with 1080 has a few drawbacks (windowing the sensor is the biggie) - Oversampling on the sensor and downresing in post will always give you the best results.

What is the reason you want to do this? Save on storage space?

***Caveat; I've used 1KWS and gotten great looking results***

Glen hi! Thanks for the tips! are several the reasons ... - I do not have a red rocket and unload the cards redmag takes too. so I thought of recording 1080 discharging fast, fast edits and takes up little space.I did not want to spend money on the atoms, but it seems that many people use.

not yet I bought the scarlet, but already have almost $ 6,500 I need
shop carefully so as not to miss. I'm with some doubts.

please help me a Glen ... look what I think of buying:

1 scarlet brain
1 canon mount
1 lcd 5 "touch
v mount batteries
1 atoms samurai or ninja
cables

been missing something?

thank you!
ah! My English is google translator (sorry for the mistakes)

1 scarlet brain
1 canon mount
1 lcd 5" touch
baterias v mount
1 atomos samurai ou ninja
cabos

faltou alguma coisa?

muito obrigado!
ah! o meu ingles é do google tradutor ( desculpe os erros)

Hi Romulo;

I'm super-new here but thought I would chime in since I am in almost the same situation. Just bought a Scarlet and planning my first job with it). I agree with Glen, I think shooting in 4kHD and then down rezing would give you the best results. I work with 2 x64 GB redmags and a 2011 17" 2.2 GHz i7 Macbook Pro with 2 ssd drives and don't find downloading the redmags takes very long at all - that depends on your definition of long, though. I have a Samurai but do not bother using it at all with the Scarlet. I might use it if I ever shoot a long event for broadcast but I think I would use another camera for that anyway. The Atomos recorders are great but you lose the benefit of 16-bit RAW (The Samurai records 422 10-bit) plus for $1500 you can get 2 64gb redmags and rotate them.

If you are going with v-mount batteries you will also need a way of getting power to the camera. I went with the following :

http://x.corecommerce.com/RED/Power-RED/Fixed-Back.html

and

http://x.corecommerce.com/QB-Switronix-V-Mount.html

which put me back about $400 plus shipping and customs duties. Hopefully Brazil charges less than Canada.

At minimum you could go for this:

http://www.red.com/store/products/battery-belt-clip-dsmc

What to buy, with all the options, is very confusing, I know, and it really depends on what you plan to use the camera for.

If you are planning to shoot 1080p with Scarlet I don't think it's the right camera for you. I would be looking for BMC or cameras like Sony FS700 etc that have native 4K sensor but records in 1080p.

If you are going to use an Atomos (Ninja / Samurai) then you will be off to a great start with the Scarlet. You can for now shoot 4K ( with the clean out look around feature on) and record the down compressed 1080 externally. The 1080 Pro RES output (or whatever flavour you want) makes the post easy, but really the RAW workflow isn't as daunting or demanding as you may think it is. Then when you have money for the rest of the kit, you'll be able to record 4K RAW internally.

RAW gives you so much power in the post workflow - even for guys who will only ever cut on FCPX...

I still wouldn't be bothered with shooting 1080 internally

thanks Tam! I will try atoms ninja, after all if I use red mags means I have to buy the side ssd module. As my brother said Glen ... in the future I can buy the complete kit.
once again thanks for the help!

You might want to leave out those god comments from your posts. There might be people here who don't like seeing religious preaching on the forums. Just a suggestion.

Hi Josh! the BMCC looks great, but it takes a long while for delivery. I made a request and July in B & H and I gave up five months after the purchase. surely when manufacturing is in full swing, I'll ask one again.

GOD bless you!

Yes don't buy BMC if you need camera now. It can take 4 months before you get it.

Can someone clean up the religious squabble? Praise to a higher being should be left off REDUSER...

I agree. The guy told he doesn't care if people don't like it but that post was deleted.

Some people need to be less sensitive about some things and more sensitive to other things. I'm not sure what's worse, the thread or the compulsory whining to complain about it. Either way, it's run it's course...
