  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1080P Capture Via Build 16

It is cropped and scaled, i.e it is first cropped to 3840 x 2160, then scaled to 1920 x 1080...

Stuart,

How about frame guides for this workflow? A frame guide on the outer edge of the crop, then action and title safe margins for 1080 16:9. That would be incredibly helpful.

Agreed it would be preferable for embedded audio and timecode in the HD-SDI outputs, but while we are waiting for those, you do have line level audio coming out the 5 pin mini-XLR.

is anybody making a 5 pin adapter cable so we can use the 5 pin out?

If you shoot 4K, 3K or 2K 16:9 then the outer safety IS this 1080p area...

This is such a great quick turnaround workflow, I can't wait to give this a try, timecode and audio will seal the deal on this quite possibly being the quickest 1080p turnaround workflow for Red.

Timecode and audio in the SDI signal would be very helpful indeed for those of us who have and use multiple Red Ones on a shoot.
This feature (Dual link SDI), is extremely important and useful to those of us who are PC only.
For example, nothing I'm doing will be going to film. It will all be Blu-ray and DVD. Presently, I have to use Redcine to down convert to 1080P as Raw Quicktime. For a one hour recording on two machines, that takes about 1 week. Then I can begin editing my new "master". Using this playback option, I could be ready to edit in a little over 2 hours. I'd call that a significant improvement.

My question is: has anyone tried this using a PC and 29.97 16:9?
And if so, did it work, and with what hardware? There are a number of cards that claim to capture dual link 4:4:4 1080P. Another benefit of this approach is that Premier Pro can then probably play the files in real time, at the moment this barely works on my computer.

Yes, has anyone tried a XENA from AJA in this application?

So has anyone had a chance to point their camera at a resolution (preferrably one with trumpets) chart and then do the 1080p playback? Just curious how the real time debayer & scaling is handling the image. It might look great -- I don't know as I have yet to see.

I have the I/o but I am still waiting for the Red.
I think this would be a poor workflow compared to the "big" one, but I have a need between 4K and SD, and that workflow could be a very good answer.

It is scaled from 3840 x 2160 (not the full 4096 x 2304) - but it's excellent. Better than I expected. Waiting for some AJA updates and I'll post some captured frames of a resolution chart for ya.

I told Stuart, in Build 17, assuming embedded TC (in the Preview out) goes live - I would love the ability to "PLAY ALL" and just play down the contents of the drive or CF - that would be pretty damn handy -

I agree Mark. It is better than expected. Audio & Timecode embedding makes this a really good workflow because it allows you to complete a project that has a quick turnaround and if that project has a different distribution chain later on and wants to revisit the R3D files, you now have a reference to work with.

As long as you frame for the crop, it's a solid workflow. It looks as good as a lot of the 1080 HD cameras out there in my opinion. I won't say that definitively until I've shot more footage and see how complex scenes look, but so far I am very encouraged. Great work guys!

The signal comes in with a greenish/purple solarized effect. Checked it with a direct connection to an HD-SDI monitor as well with same results.

Anyone else try this? Same experience?

I missed something here, did this get fixed? Because I am still incurring this issue. I just read how it was working for you now but no this is how to fix it.

Kevin, try coming out of the preview output as opposed to one of the other HD-SDI outputs. Only use those if you are going to do 4:4:4 dual link. Once I went to the preview output I didn't have any problems. I haven't tried the 4:4:4 yet as I await faster storage.

Ahhhh thanks Steve! You are the man.
