$100K REWARD...

I find too often the person that says "no" is the person with the least imagination. The limited player.

exception being line producers of course, they live to say NO in the most creative and imaginative and extremely effective ways :)

That said, Im convinced cyber forensics will be used in this situation, especially as the resources to do so could be reimbursed with an arrest, recovery and conviction. ala this generous reward, which I assume, also extends to law enforcement.

Isn't the punishment on non violent theft monetary (as in a fine), not imprisonment? I know we have strong feelings about this, but - if ever caught -the evil doers propably will walk free. :nonod:

Breaking and Entering, Trespassing, Robbery, Trafficking in Stolen goods, Fraud (When selling Merch to another)...

Also, Industrial Espionage (Sometimes intellectual property theft), Racketeering, Conspiracy (if applicable)...

There's definitely jail here...

Civil penalties can also be attached.

Tommi,

In Harris County (Houston, Texas), criminal theft is anything above $USD 5,000.00 --- assuming you can get the DA to take the case (unfortunately, not always a given in the 4th largest city in the US). Convictions can lead to jail time based on a hand full of variables.

For civil damages, Off Hollywood would have to sue. Jurisdiction in that instance would most likely shape up to be a bar exam question, given what we know from reduser (ie. US company owes the commercial property, stolen on foreign soil, thieves may not be residents of that country, etc).

Assuming the company gets the camera back, damages would be, in most cases, limited to the "economic impact" of the time without the camera.

If I ever see a EPIC camera somewhere, I'll check the serial number.

If you see an Epic camera these days an you are not

1. At Red or talking with Ted, Jim, Jarred or Graeme

or:

2. On the set of spiderman

or:
3. On prep for the Hobbit

You could try giving a call

LOL

Please keep your eyes out for the Angenieux Optimo 15-40mm - SN s/n 1591382

Very possible that the thieves could keep the EPIC on ice and try to sell the glass.

Find this lens.

Sorry to hear of this disturbing incident.
If you were identified as a film/TV crew and targeted by experienced thieves (not uncommon in Europe) then your chances of seeing the kit are very slim.

Having had a $20k item of kit stolen in rural France, I sympathise with the additional stress of dealing with foreign police or judicial system.

In my case when the item was recovered (by my own detective work) there was no justice, just a French shrug and accusations by locals that I had setup the theft as an insurance scam!
Although the 6 months of detective work in trying to pinpoint the thieves and limit the loss to my insurance company did eventually achieve a result, it also unfortunately prolonged the torment and was a regular reminder that I had been "done over" and so was quite an emotional drain.
In my case, it wasn't worth the effort to chase them down.

All the best

I've been wondering if we are helping the thieves by revealing what they can or can't do in this matter. Is it really clever to say what are we looking at - such as - serial number, tags and so on? All the thieves have to do is to put RED EPIC in google and come to this site. They will immediately know that they cannot sell the cam. As a result, they will probably throw it in a lake or something as one of the posters already mentioned.I can't help myself not to feel that the better option would've been if they knew less about it. Then, they'd try to sell it, which, they can still try, but you get my drift.

Joel (name change in process...I've been reading reduser.net for the last two years, but never had the time to be actively involved in the discussion. So, Hello everyone and Happy New Year :)

Catching a thief is not rocket science, (conviction can be). There's nothing here that they don't know. They will be caught or not as a result of the standard dynamics in this situation. The Camera? It may forever be a legend in the continuing RED saga. Like "Nessy", some may claim, "I saw it shooting a Music Video in kazakhstan". Or, "there's a guy making a film in timbuktu". But, I think if you catch the thief, you'll find the lake etc. OffHollywood gets rights to the story, hey, it might have a happy ending!

Being highly publicized would make it difficult, if not almost impossible, to sell the EPIC without getting caught.

With there being "no honor among thieves" it might then encourage one who was involved, directly or indirectly, to go for the reward, perhaps by striking an immunity deal to testify against the others. It could be a girlfriend of one of the thieves, or maybe a hotel employee who (speculation here!) may have tipped them off, and so on. Or someone who "knows something" about it.

I'm not so worried about a competitor getting hold of this camera. If they did, I'm quite sure they would call us and return it... right after they said "we can't believe you actually did this!".

I'm more concerned with catching the group that did this to Mark and his family. Plus, this camera matters to us. It has value being in service. It has no value being underground. It will never get an update, any service or see the light of day without someone noticing. It will ALWAYS be looked for so there is no value in it except if we (or Mark) gets it back. It was the absolute wrong camera to steal. If you have it, all you have is a camera that can land you in jail. And we will push hard for that.

Jim

Jim,

FWIW, I just want to commend you on not feeding the industrial espionage angle that has been brought up more than a few times.

It's a very classy (and hopefully accurate) way to treat competitors who would be none too upset if an active volcano were somehow discovered and erupted on your island.

1. Hm maybe they don't know. Do you really think they know that this cam is not officially released? What I want to say is, do you think they are that knowledgeable? If that was, say, Canon 7D, they could put it on Ebay or something, and get away with it (if they're quick)
2. I agreee, but it also depends who are the thieves -in a sense - is this a targeted operation or not.
3. I hope they didn't target this cam specifically, but they just happened to steal anything they saw was valuable (and light). At any rate, they won't stop stealing stuff, so that could lead to their arrest. Hope so.

Yep. I see your point. 100k is a juicy reward and could lead to all that you mentioned. In my opinion, it will depend on the fact how pro they are.

If I were among the group involved I would already be highly suspicious that someone was indeed going to turn us all in and collect the reward.

"Might as well be me who gets the payday for confessing and maybe just getting a suspended sentence or maybe immunity, rather than gets ZERO reward and prison time. What the hell, we can't sell the damn camera or we get caught. There would be nothing to lose to turn in the others."

In all seriousness, I hope they are stressing out and sweating bullets because of the heat.

Tru dat. However, it is highly unlikely that EPIC 006 was the only thing they stole this month. I reckon, they will destroy the cam and sell the other goods. On the other hand, if they knew what they were after, then, it's a different story - which may link some other players.

I came about this thread looking for info on the epic.

Really interested in that.

That said, I believe OP has seen "ransom" once too many and may perhaps be romanticized by the beauty of crime. However, from where I come, If ANYONE puts a $100k reward on anyone's head - he is turning himself into a target.

No need being a hero over a piece of great electronic. Especially since the electronic itself aint the joker here whereas the idea behind the camera is. Build more cameras and get past this incident. Which in the mind of a conspirator COULD/SHOULD be read as a VIRAL campaign for a new product
