  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Electronic RED glass

Electronic RED glass

the touch is part of it yes.. as well as face tracking.

These algorithms are pretty hardcore.. The same algorithms used on the EPIC to control autofocus on the RED FF35 lenses ( and canon and nikon electronic lenses ) have trickled down to Scarlet.

And yes the motors are in the lens, both autofocus, iris and zoom. That 8x lens all by itself is a technical achievement all by itself. And remember this is a cinema lens.. with custom actuators and lens group movements designed for both motion and still.

Am I the only one who fell out of his chair at the mention of FF35 Lenses?!?!?! :yikes:

I know RED has mentioned them before but I believe this is the first mention of progress on their development. Since FF35=Monstro (Hello FF35 Scarlet) I am very excited about even the mention of the RED lens program advancing.

So Jarred, what else can you tell us about the Electronic RED glass???
:emote_popcorn:

Thanks for the update, Jarred! Quick follow-up question:

So, does the S35 Scarlet with a Canon or Nikon mount also inherit these autofocus algorithms? Or is that limited to the Epic & Fixed Scarlet cameras?

Yes.. the entire DSMC line.

Not lately. I guess I should stay away, eh? :nonod:

It is a great discussion forum, but you will find hordes of shallow dof fans.

Also, Scarlet is a lot smaller than an Epic. It houses a smaller sensor, and subsequently all related ASICs will be relatively compact. (Yes, I would expect the S35 Scarlet be slightly larger than the 2/3"). Let's not forget how small these Scarlets are - they aren't much bigger than your DSLR. The whole idea of Scarlet is compactness - I am sure RED have continued remove weight and size wherever possible. 4.5 lbs is even lower than my optimistic wish (5 lbs), so I am delighted. I would expect the lens would be a big chunk of the overall weight, too.

Agreed these pieces are unbelievably compact for their capabilities. In fact both DSMC cameras are probably thinner, left to right from behind the camera, than a PRO DSLR. That said Scarlet should be close in size to EPIC. It doesn't at last comment by RED house the 645 sensor size, however Scarlet does share the majority of its sensor sizes with the EPIC (S35 and FF35) and should be very close in size.

This picture never ceases to amaze me: http://red.cachefly.net/N30/8D3.jpg

Granted, the Scarlet is longer on the axis not portrayed, but it is an amazing achievement.

I would expect the 2/3" Scarlet to be much smaller than the Epic.

The 2/3rds is a bit thinner than the Epic, but longer . The 2/3" sensor is alot smaller than the S35 sensor, but remember there is a lens that needs to fit in the brain as well :)

5 What kind of success have you had with firing up the Scarlet and taking motion/stills on the Scarlet? (image quality compared to the EPIC/boot up times)

Scarlet 8x is first to be brought up in the lab. It is still in engineering form, not "run around and take pictures form". Think of a mini-Franky. There is alot of effort is going into the autofocus algorithms and lens optimization, and alot of waiting for bits of code to come down from it's big brother...

The images coming off of it are incredible.. remember, the 2/3rds sensor is part of the Mysterium-X family, and you all know what that looks like.

10 What is the biggest change to Scarlet since the last announcement that makes you excited?

The autofocus is actually the most impressive work going on right now... Nobody has seen autofocus on a video camera work like this before, and it is pretty impressive to actually see it work.

Jarred, I want to make sure that I understand what is being said as opposed to what I hope you are saying.

I do only documentaries, sort of half pseudo-ENG and half minimal EFP. I know autofocus is not used in cinema work, and I avoid it when I can but in my line of work autofocus can mean getting the shot or not. Jarred, are you saying the the 8x Fixed will be suitable for pseudo-ENG and EFP work?
If so, I will wait and wait.

I plea to you is that you make some way to fix threaded miniplugs to XLR adapters to the body so that in quick moving situation I am not putting too much stress on the body. Please, guys there are simply some situation where I cannot use a dual sound system so durability of my audio plugs is paramount.

I do not think that the full potential of RAW footage for documentary work is fully appreciated since news organizations do not have the time to convert RAW. I am hoping that it will let me shoot what is happening and make WB adjustments, etc, as dictated by the subjects movements through different lights. That will totally change what I can do, and I feel, based once again on my hopes, that it will revolutionize documentaries.

Here is a size reference.

O.. also say hello to "Crackpot".. the newest Epic to just pop out of the oven :)

Looking awesome! Do you have a measurement from tip of fixed lens to the back of the camera?

Hey Jarred - Thanks so much for staying up late and giving us some great tidbits. I am still a little unclear about the weight issue. I want to believe that your answer to Joseph's question should be taken at face value; i.e. the fixed Scarlet brain weighs in at about 4.5 pounds - complete with lens. Is that true? It does seem too good to be true based on Epic's weight but, if it is, I am totally jazzed. I just want to silence my inner skeptic. :yikes: Thanks again.
