Total n00b question, but i just have to know.

On the 2/3" fixed, is there a microphone jack or do i need to purchase a base I/O or pro I/O Module? Would make my life a lot easier if i could just find out this little tid-bit :D

No problem with noob questions...just makes it easier for me to give you an answer.

Each brain sports a couple of balanced 1/8" ports on the front under the lens (or where the lens is to be attached)

Also, RED will have some mini scratch microphones you can use if you feel you don't want a cable running out of the front.

You can see on Jarred's "LUCKY" EPIC, the inserted scratch mics.

If you decide you want a bit more flexibility with the audio, you can get either the PRO I/O module, or just a standard I/O module.

Isn't it cool to have something so modular?

The tools are only part of the equation. You need to improve the other part too.

E. :-)

Hehe. True too...

You guys decided you're better than him just because he only posted his first name? Seems a bit unfair. You never know who you're talking to on this forum, and you never know who you might be working with on your next shoot.

Mmm. I see how that could come across that way. What I was pretty sure Emanuel meant was that we all need to improve our skills and it takes more than just a really great camera to make a great film, and that you (meaning all of us...me included) need to continually improve our skills just as RED is continually improving their end of the game. I don't think anybody ever reaches the peak of knowing it all and that we always have room to grow in knowledge.

But I thought you were the "RED Encyclopedia"!

Not that you get it changed, but just for fun...

Instead of "Registered User" or for Jarred, "Fire Chief", what would you like your title to be?

As for me: RED Encyclopedia

Hopefully this will change for the fixed lens scarlet at least. If this camera is going to compete with even the HVX, it needs XLR inputs and someway to control the audio without going into the menus.

This will be essential for live event, documentary work, etc.

Your initial answer was right on, definitely no reason you couldn't shoot a low-budget feature on a Scarlet from what we all can tell!

Edit: Agreed the 1/8" ports are kinda lame. We're Stage 2 Epic-X but still want to get a Scarlet also and want it to be capable!

Yeah...not happenin'.

It does have XLR inputs. On the optional IO module.

My concern is that the PRO IO module with full sized XLR inputs sells at a huge price when seen as a percentage of the fixed Scarlet base price, and with capabilities and ports not needed for basic documentary work. But at this price there are tradeoffs.

Exactly. To suggest that you need to spend between $1750 and $2950 to get XLRs on a $4500 camera is crazy - just the base I/O adds 40%.

From what I've seen the fixed scarlet is suppose to be a fully functioning camera. In this day and age (unless it's a consumer camcorder or a stills camera) that requires XLR inputs.

All you have to do is look at the complaints surrounding the 5D/7D and it's pretty easy to see that 1/8" ports don't cut it.

But the port on the Canons isn't balanced and can't supply phantom power. The Scarlet's ports do, so it's not like these are just your regular crappy mini-jack inputs.

A dedicated audio module with full size ports would be nice, but a lot of the time if you need good audio you'd be better off with a professional audio guy who would have his own recorder (and Scarlet, being a professional camera, has a port to sync audio recorders to the camera).

Colin... Why don't you add the Pro I/O and the Brain price together, and then show me another camera within even a mile of that price that can even come close to what the Scarlet can do, and I will start actually listening to these bullshit complaints....

Not to be daft, but won't one be able to purchase (or even make) a 1/8" to XLR converter for the two inputs on the front of the brain?

I'd think two of those would give you XLR connections with phantom power for less than the price of one of those Beachtek adapter deals for the 5D/7D.

The complaints about the audio on the 7D and 5D have less to do with input/output format than they do with the complete lack of phantom power and (until recently) the automatic gain control that could not be disabled making any recording rather useless except for scratch work.

Hey David, In terms of lens correction, ill try and show you this weekend.

The teeth are standard gear pitch out of the gate... ready for most 3rd party follow focus and lens controls.

yikes.. its pretty late.

When the base price is as low as Scarlet fixed, it seems a little ridiculous to make these kinds of comparisons... 40% of base price... The thing still comes in under $7000.

To further Jarred's point with a couple examples: At $5000, a fixed Scarlet with added ports still costs 1/2 to 2/3 the price of cameras like the EX1 or XLH1. Say what you want about image aesthetics.

BTW, I thought the fixed didn't live in the modular world. Is it even possible to add these ports?

If you plan to shoot in an XLR kind of environment, I would suggest stepping up from the Red handicam to a cinema package and skip the ugliness of mini-XLR converters.
