Qlimax 2011 was captured live by 10 RED Epic cameras and will be available on Blu-ray disc.
I operated my own EPIC and did the edit of this piece:

We didn't had much issues with the cameras :)

How was the lightning strobe effects handled with the Epic?
Did you have split screen effect type of troubles?
I don't see any... did you cut them out?

Pat

Looks very good!

Chad, for the Blu Ray check http://www.q-dance.nl/ I think it will be released for order world wide, in Feb.

Didn't see much strobe troubles in the footage, but I know the further the strobes are away the less you can see any troubles!

Looks amazing! curious did you guys do anything to protect the camera from the laser lighting?

Only the FOH was blacked out from the laser mapping, she was the highest risk. With tele lenses the risk is high. With wide angle and not in line of the lasers the risk gets less but we had a spare body in case one went down... We just want those shots

Also wondering if you had any difficulty with the strobe lighting? It's hard to tell on a youtube video.
This looks insane. The edit here is off the hook too. Great job!!

No difficulties as the strobes where not close to the camera's. Never have problems in big spaces only in small spaces but then minimal problems. Closing iris can help and shutter on around 1/50

Stijn: looks great! I had heard about this :)

Misschien moet ik volgend jaar ook maar es bij een feestje langs ;)

Dude...that's insane...!!!

Love the color on this edit.

This edit looks amazing. Seriously awesome work here. Ha - it's kinda insane (in a good way) that you guys just took the (minimized) risk with the lasers and had another body on standby.

I've got a few other questions that I would love to find out answers to if you had the time and it wasn't a bother to you...

1. What sort of glass were you using for the shoot?
2. There are some shots with slowmo in the edit - did you have the majority of cameras running at overcranked framerates?
3. How did you handle media constraints, was everyone running on 256gb SSDs and was this enough to cover them or did they change over?
4. What Compression ratio did you shoot at?
5. Which NLE did you edit in?

Cheers!

Thank you! Those laser shots are just important to be captured so we took some calculated risks :)

1. The FOH en FOH rail we had those TV lenses on them (pic in bottom (looks funny :))) On the crane we had a RED 18-85mm, Steadycam on stage had a Optimo zoom lens.
And the rest where the Zeiss Super Speeds 1.3
2. We had one free cameraman shooting all 96fps and some 300fps (me), and the other mostly shot 24fps. But we had some moments where we putted the other camera's also on 96fps for some show elements.
3. We had 128 gb SSD's (4 for each camera), so we switched and switched during the night :) and constanly emptying them to keep them in rotation
4. Mostly 10:1 and 12:1 for the slow motions
5. Edit in Premiere cs5.5 for the easy workflow with the R3D's

Thanks so much for the quick reply. You're right that TV lens does look funny! Pretty awesome though!

Congratulations again on the great result you ended up with :)

One day, I'd love to see your workflow in Premiere for editing with 10 cams at once! I've done a few multicam edits in Premiere but have always relied on the built in multicam editor which currently only allows up to 4 cams.

Love it hehehe. I have no experience or knowledge with broadcast lenses, how is it mounted? I did a quick search on google but I don't see a spec for the mount. And does it cover the full sensor? Just guessing but are most broadcast cameras 2/3" sensor?

would love to be an operator with my Epic at one of these events hehehe. You could always use one more Epic right? hehehe
