  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello,

It takes me 12 hours to transcode 10 min 6K HD footage (to ProRes 4444 1080P) on my 2012 rmbp (2.7Ghz i7, 16GB ram, Geforce GT 650M 1Gb). (on Adobe Media Encoder)

Is this normal? How do you guys work with these 6K footage on rmbp?

Thanks!

There are too many variables affecting your speed. What's your source? What's your destination? Going from a RAID to another RAID/ flash drive will help. Are you doing full debayer? Do you have a Red Rocket X?

I have never used AME to transcode r3ds so can't comment on that. RCX is optimized for this function and may help you additionally with speed.

Thanks!

My source and destination is in a RAID (read/write speed 250~300 Mb/s).

Unfortunately, I do not have RRX and I am doing full debayer.

If I look at the activity monitor, everything seems to be running on CPU. (GPU seems not to be utilized)

I will try RCX.

Thanks!

Wow, I just started exporting the same clip on RCX. It shows me ETA of 2 Hr (instead of 12 Hr :) )
Really impressive. Looks like GPU is being utilized now.

This is where RR-X is very helpful. Also having a 4gig or 6gig gfx card can be very helpful.

Yes, the RRX in an external chassis is extremely useful here. I have a MBPr and the difference, all factors equal and with the MB optimized at 16, as much as it can be is several fold.

Cannot recommend the RRX, currently more than to say, it has been just a perfect solution, for exactly the transcoding you describe and more. That has been the case for me and many rfental clients.

Thank you very much

I think biggest problem with current set up is.. 1GB of VRAM. I can't even open 6K R3D on Adobe Speedgrade..:scared:

Right, the need for ever more Vram kills laptops usefulness fast...Though my new top of the line model only has a mere double the Vram as your model, so its not like I am doing crazy things here. Without Rocket X many people do half debayers to significantly speed it up. Also make sure ADD is off, that will also slow it down. But not much you can do outside of getting a PC, trash can, or Rocket X to speed this up, or faster drives... Thunderbays from Macsales seems like a pretty cheap option, I am going to eventually grab some fast storage and then use that on set with my Rocket X to turn around transcodes faster. I do so many jobs on slow drives that it makes it very difficult to meet my tight schedules, so faster storage is all I can do outside of a trash can. Rocket X significantly helps the situation, but fast drives can't hurt it either.. I know my Rocket X flies on slow drives but I bet fast drives would make it even more insane

Laptops are not ideal choices for transcoding. You can transcode 6K R3D's to ProRes 1080 444 in about 15 minutes on a new Mac Pro with dual D700 GPUs. Maybe less. The amount of RAM in the GPUs has a big effect on transcoding speed.
