  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

10 Gigabit Ethernet Suggestions: NAS and NIC

For some reason my Windows to Mac file copies slow down to 1ghz every now and then. At first I thought it was some kind of weird router issue, but it's more like some confusion between the two OS where some extra check is occurring. Like I'll do a copy from windows to mac and I might have a unix terminal open in the mac ... and it goes slow, but I'll close that window and the copy will then go at 10ghz. Same happens if I have a file protection issue on the copy, goes slower then crap even though I told it to override the file (after this happens I often have to recycle the computers). Windows is Version 7 and the mac pro is 10.9.5. Anyone has some hints on this would be most appreciated.
 
I would suggest you move the Windows PC to 10. You might be running into protocol version differences.
I think your probably right, but I've been somewhat paranoid before it's approved for all the software I run. I'm on maya 2016/motionbuilder/nukex9 with a k6000 ... so not sure when those will be supported. Autodesk is usually pretty quick on the updates, but I've noticed the foundry is supporting big production shops and is pretty fanatical on everything being perfect before they support things (nuke on OSX still doesn't support 10.10). I also worry when there is a problem in the OS that MS won't view as high priority (i.e. how many people are on windows 10 using nuke studio with a k6000), and I'd be forced to do the patch before the fix is in. I also have some critical steps with performance capture xsens data, but I could run that on a smaller machine for a bit if that isn't supported on windows 10. Would be good for me to know how others in small production environments are doing; that are on windows 10 with mixed mac environments at 10g speeds, especially foundry and autodesk shops.
 
Windows 10 still uses 8.1 kernel. The API interface is different which would be the only issues you would likely run into if you had any. I have not seen any so far from the applications our clients have run into provided you have the video driver updated after the upgrade to 10.

I didn't know that, that's good to know that there isn't a huge difference. I'm on windows 7 for my vfx, and i'm pretty sure all my software has been ok'ed for windows 8. I btw did noticed some redusers on the foundry site stating they where having hard crashes on windows 10 using nuke 9. Seems like it is dependent on drivers and such, since some places aren't having a problem.

My gut feel on the 10g networking problems is that with 10g there is a lot more possibilities of race conditions and heavier cpu load then 1G, so OS/Application things that might be slightly flaky on 1G go down the tube at 10G speeds. I bet a lot of client/server application code hasn't been fully tested on 10G networks (especially mixed OS networks, i think i have two versions of windows and two versions of OSX on my network ... required btw by difference application software).

Now that I have my 10 g network working well, I think I'm going to move to SMB disk array mounts and buy SMB disk arrays (so I can just add more as I need).

I have an old school background on diskarrays, but the "SMB" word is new to me. Anything I should keep in mind when configuring (&buying options) for SMB disk arrays on windows 7 and the mac (OSX 10.10 and 10.11)? I will have a professional admin for my 10G network and disk arrays finally, but he doesn't have a film background, so I'm trying to pull together high level requirements.
 
Samba is simply a connection to the File and print service and open file system standard. This is how permissions are able to cross from a Windows Domain over to a Linux system and back again.
 
Jap I see the performance chart on the bottom of their page, comparing to Neatgear XS712T with 38Gbps shared bandwidth.
 
New 10G switches with the latest processor tech will be available by the end of the year from many players in the Enterprise market and consumer companies are getting in on 10G as well.
 
40 gigabit is actually pretty affordable now if you know what to buy.

I got a 32 port Arista 7050QX-32 for $850.

Sun Oracle 7046442 cards can be gotten for $60 and you just need to flash the firmware.

Fiber optic transceivers are $49 on fs.com and they recently started offering free shipping.

Alex, are you connecting Macs to this switch? I know ATTO has 40Gb cards with Mac OS drivers, but they're kinda pricey.

I'm just wondering if those Sun or Mellanox cards can be flashed with Atto firmware...

I don't have any mac desktops and I never got an external thunderbolt enclosure working, but the 24 of the ports default to being 4x 10 gig so you can just plug in a splitter cable without any extra configuration. Also cheaper than getting four 10 gig transceivers.
 
The Mikrotik CSS326-24G-2S+RM is also a pretty great deal.

Two 10g SFP+ ports and 24 gigabit ports for $120 new.
