  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1.8" SSD Module

It is noticeably missing from this picture.

How the Bomb (a.k.a Red Sight) EVF coming along?

Somebody set up us the bomb.

Ok, I'll be serious. I'm hoping the Bomb EVF will be ready soon too.

Bomb EVF is ramping up for production.. Should see the first units roll in next month.

very cool! Love those red hex screws too! Can are those only for the module adapter or just a special treat for Jarred?

KO

Special treatment :)

Nice! What lens is that?

RED PRO 17-50mm.. my new favorite lens.

multiple SSD modules

multiple SSD modules

Jarred,

I don't know if this had been asked/answered recently: what are the current configurations for multiple SSD modules on camera?

  • Can you mirror output to two SSD modules for on-camera redundancy?
  • Can you span two modules, so when one is full you begin recording on the other?
  • Can you record different compression rates to different SSD modules? (ie: REDCODE 100 to one and REDCODE 42 to another?) I guess this question is also asking if the module is doing the compression/conversion or if it is just a bus being written to by the brain.
  • Using a tether of some sort how far away from the brain can the SSDModule(s) be?
  • Will it be possible to duplicate one SSD to another on camera?

I realize that the flexibility will change as the software is upgraded, but I'm wondering what will be available on day one. Sorry if you've answered these questions somewhere else.

yes, yes, kinda, yes (500 feet with the fiber module to module adapter) , that's a Good idea..

Drool. Lossless 5K in the pocket. I want those red screws also.

I hope the SSD will not extend this much from the camera, otherwise I can easily think of 10-15 ways it will get hit during shooting.

Nice atitude. thats like someone commenting at your screening "man I hope this is not the final cut is it? " just rude dude.

I for one want you to list the "10 to 15 ways it will get hit during shooting"

I promise my A'C's will have a remedy for all of them.

@ Jarred - this is great stuff and how exciting its all working. Man the "live" EPIC is so much sexier than the renders.

can any 1.8" SSD be used or is it restricted to RED Made only ? the latest SSD's are pretty fast for writing. hopefully we'll have some choices

Only RED.. it is a custom enclosure and connector. We tried to use normal drives.. but the insertion rate was so incredibly piss-poor on those standard drive connectors ( likely because they were designed to be inserted +/- 4 times in their lifespan in laptops ) so we had to rehouse them.

Dont worry though.. we have a good history of having the fastest media on the planet.

Lookin' good! So how does the speed on these SSD modules compare to the RED-RAM and/or the CF cards?

Up to 500ft optical tether between modules and brain... That's pretty damn cool, too!

I hear ya. A plastic guide on the SATA connector of an OCZ SSD snapped off when I removed the SATA cable for the 2nd time after buying the damn thing. OCZ claimed that since it was physical damage it's not covered by the warranty. Funny how the snapping off of a such 6x3 millimeter piece of plastic can completely ruin a $350 drive. Hold on... it's not funny at all!

A Photofast G-Monster or a Team Group Xtreem...?

He means how far the actual SSD sticks out from the side of the module, not the size of the module.

I think it's show half-inserted for illustration and it'll go most or all of the way in.

OK, got it. I assumed it would go in further too.

yes, thats called the "trade in program module" :) heh heh heh.

I guess that's a no.

I was hoping since we'll have MX and Epic bodies, I wouldn't have to maintain old media (red Drives, Ram and CF) and just stock the newer media.

thinking the same thoughts here... I would love an adapter, module, sled, something that plugs into a RED One and accepts the new SSD modules. OTOH, if the 64GB cards work fine in the RED One and can record 2K @ 120fps and all the other modes, then I really don't care I guess. I'd prefer to shoot just CF all the time anyway.
