  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thanks to everyone's patience I'm learning very fast about Scarlet.

What exactly is a 1.8" SSD Module, and what does it do?

Thanks.

You mean to use "instead" of CF cards or the Red Drive? Is the Red Drive only for the Red One?

You will be able to use Red Drives on Scarlet (with an adapter module) but you probably won't be able to use the higher framerates and lower Redcode compression.

For instance, I doubt you will be able to get 3K @ 120fps with Redcode 100.

Well, from the image, printed on the side of the 1.8" was RED 128. I'm going to guess that means 128gb.

Obviously how much that holds is dependent on what quality you're shooting, but REDCODE for the R1 was, at 4k, 28mb/sec for Redcode 28, 36 mb/sec for Redcode 36, so I bet that 42 and 100 will be... 42 and 100 mb/sec, respectively. You do the math.

This is only a guess, though. I don't think it's clear whether RED will continue linking exact data rates to the actual name of redcode formats.

I was hoping that would be the case, but the price seemed a little low for 128gb, given the price of Red RAM.

That said, its been a while since the Red RAM was released, so perhaps the 1.8" SSD price is a reflection of advancements and price drops for SSD drives.

I think you will find that is the price of the module not including the media. The drives are one unit these act like SSD magazines that you swap over. I expect it to be fairly expensive but we'll see

I was hyped by the price too, but then I heard that was the price for just the module, so yeah, back to CFs.

So, the SSD "media" price is not known at this time. What EXACTLY is the Solid State Drive media? Is it like a DVD disc, or more like a hard drive?

Looking around, I'm seeing 1.8" SSDs off the shelf with 128 GB of storage for between $400-600. These top out at around a theoretical 93 MB/s - just short of the theoretical 100 MB/s required of REDCODE 100.

Which is interesting because RED 16GB Flash Cards currently fit in that price range.

Which is unfortunate because my 32 GB Flash Card cost $100.

Which means (as we all know/knew/are not learning) that RED uses absolutely the very best products for their storage.

I'll let you all draw your own conclusions from these observations in regard to what we might expect the prices to be.

Solid State media has made huge leaps due to the massive research in the technology, I wouldnt be surprised if RED managed to produce a quality SSD at that price point, seeing as how they are producing a great camera at a great price.

Its actually not difficult to understand if you think about how much space they fit into the formfactor of a CF card, just translate that technology to a much larger formfactor.

I just wish there was a 2.5" SSD module as I have four of these from a previous computer raid 0 that I built a year ago.
