Since the 64gb Red Ram is external so you can have several to swap out but what about the 1.8 sata flash on camera module. How do you download without using the cam and is there a 1.8" reader coming to attach to computer. Right now all I find on these flash units are OEM for laptop drive use.
Makes the express card flash more applealing right now.

I also hope that they will let flash modules dump to the Red Drive and then I won't have to deal with this. Having the red drive be both a dump and aquisition tool would be great and make it doubly worth having.

I don't know that you can swap the Red RAM out, can you? (at least hot swapping.) And at $4,500, that's quite a bit to have around anyway, except for larger budgets or rental I suppose.

The $500 flash options, however, come with a housing which might allow hot swapping?

I think many of us are waiting to see about dumping to the drive. It sure would be nice. Something you should get used to hearing for another month: "We'll know a NAB". (That is going to be like this week was at REDUser.net--crazy and exciting!)

I'm assuming that connecting 1.8" flash drive to a computer will be done via external SATA connector (or any hardware that facilitates this).

Red ram is in an external housing like the red drive it seems to me from the red site not a module connected to cam. In theory and enough cash you can have a couple and just switch the red ram external enclosure out when its full and pop in a fresh one. Take full Red ram enclosure to computer and empty using what i assume would be a host of connecting possibilities, firewire usb, sata, etc that are on the Red ram enclosure.
What do I do with a full 32gig 1.8 sata flash card ?

I assume the same thing you mentioned with the Red Ram and Drive. It's a SATA connector, right? I've never used one, so maybe I'm missing something.

The RED RAM looks just like the RED DRIVE. It's the same thing except it uses drives that are made of FLASH instead of magnetic platters. Currently, the biggest ones out there are 32GB for 2.5" SATA and they're rather expensive. However, cost per GB is still half that of Panasonic P2 media, so as an HVX200 owner, I'm pleased. And definitely considering the RED RAM as my primary record solution. As faster and cheaper 2.5" FLASH "hard drive" come to market, RED RAM should grow in capacity and shrink in price.

As for the FLASH module options, they connect to the side of the camera and we have the various options. I think a lot of people are looking at the 1.8" SATA FLASH as the best option, me too. It uses 1.8" form factor hard drives (FLASH drives) with SATA interface. To read these on a PC/Mac, you will need to connect the camera or FLASH module to that system. Or you will need a drive tray to connect these FLASH drives to that in turn connects to USB2, FW or eSATA. The 1.8" FLASH media are designed to be internal hard drives in devices like iPods, camcorders, etc.. So it's not going to be as simple as buying a reader like you would for CF cards or even ExpressCard media. But it won't be tough either... There are external USB2/FW enclosures on the market right now that are bus-powered and hold 1.8" SATA hard drives. One of these left open as a drive tray should work just fine. But I think there will be more elegant solutions down the road as more drives hit the market and more people buy them for various purposes. I have a while before I get my RED so more options should show up to help clarify all this. I'm hoping between now and August or so that RED RAM will double in capacity and/or half in price.

Are you saying that the 1.8 flash card itself, not the module, has an sata connector on it. I've never seen one.
So an express card with sata connectors like the firmtek i have for my laptop would work to connect the card and empty?

you will need to connect the camera or FLASH module to that system

Thats what i'm trying to avoid. Taking the camera or the module off would stop the shooting process right.

Yes. They are a 1.8" hard drive just with FLASH chips inside instead of magnetic drive platters. Treat them just as you would a SATA hard drive. However, IIRC, the 1.8" form factor drives are 3.3V so be sure you can supply the proper power to them from whatever your connect method is.

Here's what they look like.

Thanks i'll give a call to firmtek and see if it can.

I wouldn't sweat it too much... There's not a whole lot on the market just yet and there will be more solutions for interfacing to these drives in the coming months. If you have a really low RED # and need to shoot right away using FLASH, I say suck it up and buy a RED RAM or two or go for the CF module. With CF it won't be as efficient as the ExpressCard or 1.8" options, but at least the media is commonly available right now. It will be interesting to see what RED suggests at NAB regarding the 1.8". It seems to be their FLASH module of choice as well (following the RED RAM).

Yeah just want to get a clear picture on all the options. Getting all the ducks in order kind of thing so the torrent of info coming from NAB will be easier to assimilate.

i would love to suck it up and get a couple of Red Rams but at $4,500 each i just have to look at other options.

And if anyone is interseted i read this today about flash pricing.

I hope that panasonic reads this and gives us a big surprise for their P2 cards because the form factor opportunities the HVX200 allows are still viable I think even with RED around the corner. i ain't selling mine but damn they better get their pricing on P2 together and fast.

Contrary to most others here, I'm planning to buy one more - or maybe an HPX-500.

Diiferent tools. Different markets. Diferent uses.

But from what I read here, I should sweat it untill all the RED-HVXes go for sale on eBay -;)

Yes all you hx200 dumpers lets have your P2 cards!

I also just remebered that Mr. Jannard mentioned in a post a long time ago that there was a possibility of a smaller Red cam IIRC.

An NAB wish of an announcemnt of a future 2K max mysterium smaller cam with lens. I could definitely live with that.

Yes yes I know the Red one isn't out yet and already I'm....
