hi red team
the 1:1 zoom is a great support to get the right focus, will it be possible in future to have a function for the focus puller to switch it on DURING recording, in best case on an own monitor output.
i think this would be amazing to get focus during dolly movements for example.

cheers

the official answer is "never" as it's processor heavy to scale the feed, and impossible to scale 2 different feeds at once.

However, they said never to 1:1 zoom also, so never say never :) but the official answer has been a consistent no.

you are right. the word "never" can be cancelled since red appeared on the stage ... merry christmas! :w00t:

It was possible in build 13 to magnify, and i was shooting a documentary at that time and was very happy with it that i could check my focus during shooting. I ask for this also to be posible again. No answer so far.

I know people made mistakes because they kept on shooting will they where in the magnify mode. So maybe they can make a software choise Yes shooting with magnify on/off and No magnify when shooting!!

I occasionally hit the magnify button by accident during recording. Most of the times nothing happens. Sometimes the screen turns black, other times the recording stops and yet at other times I get a 1:1 magnify while the recording continues.

1:1 is really cool during preps, but when recording, I would be happy with a lesser magnify. I mean could it detect REC and zoom with the more process it coud have, without disturbing the camera ?

Also, would be great to use any tool on Red, like the magnify, false color, edge color, etc. without disturbing the director monitor. Only on the LCD.

Recently, we use magnify and the sound guy though it was the frame of the shoot on director's monitor. On action, director yell "Boom Boom Boom" until his veins pop out of his neck...

Not funny at first, but a good joke for your fellow friends finally !

hehehe

not possible, it would need another graphic process. --> Wait for epic.

But as others said on other threads, a little text "magnify" on a
corner would be enough. Clients always asks me if it's the final frame, ... amusing at the beginning, but it's annoying all day long...

It's funny how people yell boom boom boom, or boom up, when they see it in frame. What I do is turn to the boom op, and spread my fingers the precise distance he has to move to clear frame, usually without saying anything. Yelling boom out or boom up usually makes the boom op move up too far, and also makes it clear that nobody gave him a correct frame line in the first place, which is a lousy thing to do. We're shooting picture AND

. . . sound, so we really need to give the boom op a good frame line. And even with the best shotguns, you need that mic to be as close as possible to the frame. I think the best sound guys will blow a take every now and then because they are working hard to get that mic as close as possible. Another technique I use is to turn my 19" HD monitor to face the boom op before a take, and let him actually dip his mike in and out of frame to see what's what. I often tell boom ops that if they haven't been given a frame line check before the first take, that they should just put the mike in front of the talent's face so that the camera op HAS to give them a frame line.

Oh, and I want to get 1:1 zoom but I'm concerned about build 17 bugs, so I haven't upgraded. Are my concerns valid, or?

I didn't know this was possible in B13. Would be really useful when the camera is moving on a jib or otherwise.
