Hello everyone-

This is a proof of concept for an upcoming project with an auto manufacturer. A few months ago I approached my buddy Stephan about filming an engine build in a stylistic way. This was the night before a race and he was thrashing to get this thing built with a few hours to sleep before qualifying the next day. The engine is a 2AR engine out of a Scion tC, used in Formula Drift by Fredric Aasbo.

Here is the fruit of one man and three cameras over the course of 3 hours. Not perfect, but considering the time constraints, I am pretty happy with it.

Shot on Epic Dragon, Sony A7s and stills from 5D MkIII.

Very nice. Good feel to it. Really liked it
As a fellow Norwegian I was lucky enough to film a segment with Fredrik outside Las Vegas 2 years ago for a sport show on TV. Super nice guy and what a driver! (And what a car)

Thanks guys. Yes, both Fredric and Stephan are solid guys. Fredric is one of the few guys I will put myself in harms way while filming. Incredible driving skills and very humble guy.

Thanks for this :)

Really well done! Well lit, directed and edited.

Wondering how an engine block that was designed for 180HP can be juiced to 1000HP without blowing up?

A lot of small 4-pot motors will handle that kind of power, at least for a while.

For example the old and pretty basic VW 2.0 9A engine will handle that kind of power given suitable boost and fuelling. Plenty of custom parts, but the standard block, head casting and crank can be retained.

Lots of fun :)

Thank you sir. Kino Flo Diva on a boom over the engine flagged to provide a pool of light from straight overhead. 2 F&V 1x1 Litepanels cross-lighting the table of parts.

This can survive because pretty much every internal component is upgraded. Rods, pistons, rings, studs everything is designed to withstand the stresses from a typical drifting run or 20. Every part of the valve train and head have been beefed up as well. Stephan has tons of experience building engines- a highlight being a 1,600HP Twin Turbo NSX motor that ran the 1/4 mile in 6.52 seconds at 215.2 mph . :) Always fun to work with a good friend that does great work.

If it's not too much bother . . . which camera was used for what angle?

Static time lapses were Dragon. Moving time lapses were 5D Mk III. Realtime footage was A7s.

Hi DC

this is great, excellent grade, choice of music, everything was bang on.

Was the slider 'shoot move shoot' ? Or simply moving super slow?

thank you

Nice job getting the cameras to match.
Was the a7s in SLog2?

Also, any need to deflicker the TL sequences?

Bill-

Yes, it was shot in S-Log2 and everything was graded lightly in Resolve.

No flicker at all- everything was in full manual and no issues.

Thanks Adrian-

Yes, in the Oracle controller it was set to shoot move shoot. 1 second exposure, 1/8 sec delay, 1 second exposure. Helps to keep certain items in focus while moving, while creating blur on the subject.
