Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
It will be interesting to see how new cameras from everybody unfold. I own "lots of cameras" from "lots of manufacturers" for different reasons.
I'm in a major market, the major market, plus I work in others as well. All I can say is Canon is MIA in specific areas out here. And I love their...
That was one point I brought up in the somewhat surprise interview with Jarred while he was in Tokyo on Scott's stream. Which was very nice of him to do.
RED changed course with DSMC3 to not try to reinvent the wheel on some accessories, when there were others who were doing it better or best...
I wouldn't use H.265 as an acquisition codec, I'm all REDCODE RAW for my work. But there are some who need extremely long roll times and really small files for cloud or wireless delivery. Lots of people in ENG, Event, Sports, etc. Some of the areas where RED Connect are being used to go to...
Heh. I saw where people were getting their revenue, but with RED being a private company, that is largely an unknown. And I noticed the site also thought RED was 3X size the employee base of the actual number. Whether the valuation was 3, 5, 10 years it doesn't really matter in my mind. And...
I think to win the game RED and/or Nikon should do the following.
- Don't rely on internal lens motors, they break and a whole damn new thing needs to be created
- Do rely on /i Data, it works!
- Create a smart motor system that plugs into the EXT Ports on DSMC3 bodies that can run Focus...
I do my homework like my life depends on it. Nikon currently is in 3rd place of the total global camera market. Canon leads by a big amount, Sony is in second, Nikon third and about the combined side of smaller companies like Fuji, Hasslelbad, etc. Smartphones btw make up a larger camera...
The full frame 1.8X were/are stellar optics. Myself and Mark Toia owned a set and shared images and notes for a while. Mechanics and build quality could have been better, but they did a nice job on the image, coatings, flare, and optics in general. The 50, 85, and 135 is slick. Just sad they...
Jarred replied to a few comments on that. RED Studios Hollywood isn't apart of this deal. It's also a separate company from what I can tell. There's a lot of stuff I don't think will experience change due to this deal.
Got a lot of love for that place. I've filmed there back when it was...
I don't mean to be the one pointing out the obvious, but it's in the press release that they well be a subsidiary and still operating separating as Nikon and RED. From our side of things, RED will continue, just with ownership under Nikon.
There are huge advantages to having a US based camera...
Correct, but it seems that people don't understand what wholly-owned subsidiary means. And we have zero idea about any terms that are hinted at.
It's um... in Nikon's best interests to keep RED growing as well. From a market point of view, RED had 4 of their biggest years likely majorly...
I think they'll keep it as like a new version of NRAW or whatever, but I am curious to see if there's crossing the road tech benefits.
And um... To those not tuned in. Nikon has a huge war chest.
I'm of lots of perspectives, but remember companies like SmallHD couldn't actually make...
I guess we should also mention, Nikon gets all of RED's patents, which are valuable. Not just the RAW stuff, but ALL the stuff. This allows them to implement technology across brands as well. Curious to see where that leads.
And probably of higher value is RED's engineers, programmers, and...
To answer a few of those questions or respond to some points.
Based on the press release from Nikon, RED will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary, which means RED lives on.
There is an interesting bit in the release, "subject to the satisfaction of certain closing conditions thereunder"...
I guess to be thorough, we did get some gains from going from mirrorless lens mounts to things like PL and that is the ability to put stuff between the rear of the lens and in front of the sensor. Like behind the lens ND solutions for instance, but you can also use it for diffusion and all...
LPL was created to solve a few hurdles that optical designs may face for larger format sensors.
Firstly though, two things before I write more. PL mount with some optical designs can happily cover over 60mm diagonal. Lenses like the Leitz Thalias come to mind. Additionally, credit needs to...
