Italian Broadcaster tests production and transmission in 4k with R1

Leafing through the magazine "TV Technology Europe" (March 2010 edition, sorry - couldn't find it online) I found an article where Italian broadcaster RAI explored the viability of using 4k - and RED - for broadcasting. I'll paraphrase some sections below. During ten days they used a R1 with...

    16mm goes 4k

We just received our custom re-built 16mm projector and I just couldn't resist the temptation to run the first test with our R1. Here's the temporary setup (can you spot the double8-camera in the background?): I only had a crappy print from the 1970s which is likely to be 3rd generation, but...

    4th graders, RED and Coollights

As a community service, we shot a little commercial for our Waldorf school today. Great opportunity to test out a few new things, Build 30 in 4.5k, and the Coollights 600 LED 5k flood with soft box. I ran the latter off a small V-lock battery that lasted for a good hour. No cables for the kids...

    WTB: 4x4 filters

Looking for ND .9 or ND 1.2 ND SE .6 Polarizer Should be optically o.k., chips on the edge are fine. If you happen to have a 4x5.6 filter tray for Chrosziel, I'd also be interested in filters in that size.

    Red Rocket for the iPhone

Just chanced upon this: http://redrocketfortheiphone.wordpress.com/ , http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=294533143&mt=8 I thought it would be a couple of years before we could use R3D on an iPhone...

RED doing just fine at -20C

...less so my feet. Warm, woolen socks next time. Yesterday I spent about 2 hours in the cold, taking the lovely landscape as an excuse to test our RED in low temperatures. After a night of rendering, enjoy these 1 1/2 minutes: http://www.vimeo.com/8569866

2009: A mock movie poster retrospective

Well, this year is almost over, MMX looks like a very, very exciting year. To celebrate the passing of this one, here's a collection of fake movie posters. If you have any to share, please do add. The new modular concept is announced. Ted is busy showing the world how fab RED is. The ups...

    Low budget blimp

In film school we used to cut some corners, but I just had to laugh when a friend sent me this picture (is it an Arri BL?)

    Touch Screen suggestion / idea

    1) It would be cool if one could have a little marker on the EVF (or primary LCD) that shows where the finger is on the touch screen. (That might make it possible to use that follow focus feature even when operating alone; alternatively, have a little trackball in the side handle / gunner to the...

    Coffee and Tomatoes

Just did a little test with Build 21, featuring actors that were bought (and eaten after the shoot), 100 fps. http://www.vimeo.com/7480538

    Free Apple Software

MacHeist is currently giving away free (and legal) licenses for: ShoveBox (Catch all the little scraps of information that you can’t immediately act on, but don’t want to forget. ShoveBox sits up in your menu bar, waiting for you to drag in text, images, URLs, and more.) WriteRoom (WriteRoom is...

    Snow Leopard kills Hackintosh

If you are currently running a Hackintosh system, be careful before updating to the forthcoming 10.6.2. update. http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/11/snow-leopard-update-blocks-intel-atom-kills-hackintoshes/

Flow - cool new software to keep your projects organized

Just found out about GridIron's Flow, basically a tool that runs in the background and keeps track of all the files that a project consists of. Keeps an overview of versions, and measures time spent on each file/project. Now, if this also supports R3D files, this would become a truly awesome tool!

Cokin 4x4 filters — any good?

Saw that Cokin now make M-Pro 4x4 and 4x5.6 filters, and at a very competitive price (about 30 dollars per 4x4). Has anyone used these and can share his/her experiences with them? (Apologies if this has been answered before; I did a search on reduser, that yielded 0 hits. Tried again with...

    23.97 to 25 fps — how?

I have a clip shot and edited in 23.97 fps. Now if I want to burn it onto DVD (PAL) I have to speed it up to 25 fps. But how do I do this? I know this should be pretty straight forward, but... Tried Google, but there I only found heaps of info on how to get it into the NTSC world. Tried Apple...

    New showreel (RED only footage)

One of the good things about spending a couple of days in bed while ill is you get time to do some of the things you've been putting off. Like making a showreel. Some time lapses, some documentary work, some landscapes, a bit of period dramatisation, some sport, some concert recordings, some...
