Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
I just watched this Beyonce music video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaasJ44O5lI and was wondering how they got the spinning light rig that was used.
In close ups it appears to be six regular light bulbs in a circle; for some of the wider shots (the opening) they turned some of them off...
Hi, are there any filters that doesn't lose a lot of stop that let you shoot lasers without risk of damaging the sensor? Just curious. Are there any lasers that are safe to use? I figure those for light shows should mostly be okay since they're meant to be safe for eyes.
Hi all, question from a new freelancer:
I need a way to carry 4x4 frames in a regular (non-hatchback) car.
My grip gear is meager. I'm getting a few c-stands, combo stands, beefy babies, apple boxes, etc. But I need 4x4 frames (any recommendations for what you'd bring? I'm thinking one...
Anyone used these? Lost a few scrims, could use a few more:

For personal, not rental use. They sure seem affordable.
I'm editing a video for internet delivery and will need to grade it soon. This is my first time working with log footage (redcode log) and I'm not sure whether or not I should be applying an LUT or just grading it to how it should look by applying aggressive contrast. It's kind of annoying...
Does anyone have a scrap of day blue muslin they don't need and could send me? This might be a terrible idea, but I'm thinking of painting the white side of some bead board the same color as day blue muslin (getting it color matched at home depot) because I like the look of blue fill for day...
I'm shooting a fun video project and I want it to look like we used anamorphic lenses, just for kicks. I'm making some elliptical waterhouse stops for the front of the lenses to get elliptical bokeh and using an ultracontrast filter because it flares, ghosts, and gives low contrast. Might add...
I can no longer put up with this. How can I grade anything when the output looks totally different from what I'm monitoring?
After sending footage to FCP it gets SO much darker. Like nearly a stop, especially in dark areas. The gamma issue is a nightmare. Any ways to deal with this? I want...
I need to treat some footage that's already been shot so it looks like a dream (a premonition).
This is allowed to be slightly cheesy. What are the hallmarks of this look, or classic examples of it? Slight overexposure? Heavy on-lens diffusion (digital beauty pass), skewed, blurry edges...
This isn't entirely germane to Red in particularly, particularly since it will be some years until I can afford a Red camera, but I'm wondering if anyone has any advice for how to get started as a freelance DP in LA.
In the past I've been hired almost exclusively for unpaid local work (some...
From h264? I might have used a cheapo camera that should not be named here, but the advice on this forum is generally better than elsewhere. Just mask the offending area and blur it or apply noise reduction? What's the best technique? Thankfully the worst parts aren't visually significant...
I'm applying to a bunch of film MFAs for next fall. So far I submitted my reel to most of them, and this

to one of them.
There are a lot of people who REALLY know their stuff here. I got negative feedback on the original project's rough cut but did a major re-edit to...
Hi everyone. I'm applying for an MFA in production and I wanted some feedback on my "visual sample," shot on red and hv30.
Most schools seem to want a five-minute sample, so I'm including the first half of a short horror/comedy I shot a couple years ago and am editing now.
This is a rough...
So I finally got a light meter and...I can't figure it out.
I'd learned to use an incident meter to expose for skin tones (which are apparently around 18% gray for caucasians)...and that's worked okay for me. This is my first "dualmeter," though and my readings are confusing.
When I use...
I'm editing something in Prores 444 1080p (nice codec except for gamma nightmares) and when I send my footage to Color from Final Cut it looks normal, then I grade it and send it back...and it ends up much darker than what I see in Color. So from Final Cut to Color is okay, but sending the...
Hi,
I need to CC a limited amount of hv30 footage to intercut with the red. The "look" of the footage is acceptably close in terms of noise and dynamic range, but color rendering is noticeably different. Under redspace, the red renders green far bluer than the hv30. Skin tones are similar...
Sorry if this has already been answered before; if it has, you can direct me to whatever thread answers it and otherwise ignore this one...
I have some footage shot on build 15 and I'm developing it with the new redalert with the new "color science" or whatever. Since the color temperature...
