  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When do you think that Nikon RED will finally announce the cameras with expeed and new sensors?

Hey fgonz,
Great to see actual humans coming back to the newly reopened RU. The board is currently battling bot gentrification.

A Nikkor cinema lens set was recently teased and the Komodo 6K OG seems to be recently discontinued.

With Cinegear coming up there may be some announcements at that event.

If I could imagine 2 potential new cameras it could be a replacement ZMount Komodo 6k
and perhaps a 65mm class RED at the higher end.

It’s interesting that for over 10 years RED has capped their high end sensors at 8K Vista Vision but I wouldn’t be surprised if they a finally focusing on something bigger.

Would be interesting if Expeed processors might be included. I honestly think that might be further down the line but who knows.

The industry world is in a very precarious situation (war, energy shortage) and I’m trying to be discreet with just how bad things can get if they don’t improve very very soon.

Camera releases and products in general might slow down a bit.

Would be happy though if the existing lineup (including Komodo OG) can still get meaningful firmware updates for the time being.

Also wonder if Graeme Nattress at RED might have something new with Redcode debayering improvements.

Hello Felipe,
we actually met on this board a couple of years ago back around the Nikon/RED acquisition. Great to chat with you again.

Really enjoyed reading your take, Brian. I’m pretty much on the same page. It feels like the Nikon and RED Digital Cinema integration is going to be more of a slow burn rather than something we’ll suddenly see fully realized at the next event.

Cinegear could definitely bring some kind of hint or teaser, especially with the Komodo OG fading out. A Z-mount Komodo replacement sounds very realistic to me, and honestly would make a lot of sense for people already invested in Nikon glass. The 65mm idea is exciting too—would be cool to see them finally push beyond that 8K Vista Vision ceiling.

That said, I kind of feel like the first steps might be more “under the hood” stuff—processing, color science, maybe improvements to REDCODE—before we get a full-on Nikon-RED camera. Either way, it feels like we’re in that quiet phase where things are being set up behind the scenes. Curious to see what actually shows up in

Why is the integration of technology between Nikon and RED predicted to be a lengthy process rather than an immediate change?

It would be nice to see major updates, not necessarily new cameras but firmware updates or hardware updates. Hell I'd even pay to send my Komodo x in if I could get more features out of the camera. Give me 32 bit float, reliable auto focus and the komodo x is now better than the fx5

I'm not an engineer but I have been buying and using gear for good while.
In other words, I know as much as you do but I'm comfortable speculating.

Both RED and Nikon had rather mature product lines before joining forces and sorting out what technological to advance, change, etc can take time to do right. Some tech was likely already in development (i.e sensors among others at RED) and Nikon will likely have another EXPEED Asic coming sooner rather than later.

RED has definitely pumped the brakes on camera releases as they only really released 1 truly new camera (V-Raptor XE) since the Nikon purchase.
I think RED averaged about 2-3 cameras a year before that.

I would rather they both take their time but yes I also would like to know what comes next.

The current cameras are already very advanced so I'm fine with a focus on new firmware updates to the existing lineup while new models get worked on.

I also hope Komodo OG get a few late stage enhancements.
Will see.

Nikon: "We are focusing our investments on image processing engines and sensors and are currently preparing for their launch."

Nikon's future product strategy is

Summary of the interview with Nikon

  • Focus on investing in next-generation image processors, image sensors, and video cameras.
  • Launching an engine and software platform.

Nikon Z9II may feature a new image processor.

The Nikkei Shimbun has published interview articles with executives from Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fujifilm. The above is a summary of the interview with Nikon; interviews with Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm are also available, and the full articles can be viewed via the source link at the bottom of this article (paid article).

According to an interview with Nikon, they are currently focusing their investments on next-generation image processing engines, image sensors, and video cameras in their camera business, laying the groundwork for their next new products.

Nikon has also stated that its future product strategy involves creating an engine and software platform and incorporating it into various products. This may mean creating a common foundation that allows for the interconnection of the image processor, image sensor, AI chip, memory card slot, wireless-related equipment, etc., enabling the creation of digital cameras using various component combinations.

It might be easier to understand if you think of it as something like the TNGA platform used by Toyota Motor Corporation. In conventional car manufacturing, development was carried out separately for each car model, which was inefficient. However, with TNGA, the "platform" and "engine/transmission" that determine the basic performance of a car are developed as common modules in an integrated manner, making it possible to efficiently offer a lineup of high-performance cars, from kei cars to large SUVs.

Nikon may also be designing each component modularly, combining parts with different specifications, such as the image sensor and AI chip, around the image processor, to efficiently design a variety of digital cameras. This approach might allow them to manufacture a wider variety of digital cameras more efficiently and in a shorter timeframe.

Interesting times for RED. The possibility of a Z-mount Komodo successor is particularly intriguing, especially with the recent lens developments.
