Nikon to Acquire US Cinema Camera Manufacturer RED.com, LLC

Looks like Nikon paid $85 million for Red. This puts in perspective just how small Red Digital Cinema was.

I wouldn’t say it’s a place where neither Canon or Sony have been. Indeed, my concern is it is exactly where both Canon and Sony are right now. Both of these brands have a high end video division. And for that reason we see some features are deliberately left out of hybrid models, while other...

Matt Tremblay, RED's Chief Design Officer resigns

Well this would be part of the change that Jarred spoke of. I think this is Red becoming Nikon. Some point to Nikon's acquisition of MRMC as proof that Nikon will leave Red alone… but Nikon’s core business is not motion control systems… it’s cameras… just like Red.

I’m curious about the actual dynamic range. Looking forward to hearing what you learn.

Nikon buys their sensors from Sony. The Burano is crippled because Sony wanted it that way. The same sensor is in the A1 and has better performance than in Burano.

The difference is Nikon was not in the motion control business prior to that acquisition… that purchase and the others you mentioned were new fields for Nikon. However, you may have heard… Nikon has been making cameras for a little bit now. They have a substantial reputation and are well respected.

You see now, this is going exactly as I said… Nikon’s first action was to replace Jarred Land with Keiji Oishi… a former department manager. Either Keiji got a massive promotion or he is just there to help with the dismantling of Red. In any case, if Red was really going to operate as a...

Nikon to Acquire US Cinema Camera Manufacturer RED.com, LLC

Make no mistake, this marks the end of Red as a brand. Central to this is the fact that the first thing Nikon did was to remove Jarred Land as CEO. Also, Nikon promised no changes to Reds product lineup… which sounds like no new Red products will be developed… as new products would be a change...

I’m feeling like the parties over. I wouldn’t hold my breath for new models. Be grateful for what remaining firmware updates we see. Things are likely going to get dodgy from here on out. These are uncharted waters. In the upside, Sony’s new full frame global shutter is reported to have...

That’s pretty much what they always say. Then a year later the layoffs start. Seen it too many times. This is business, zero reason to believe “this time” will be the time that’s different.

This will go the way it almost always goes. Everything worth a dam will be integrated into the acquiring company and the original company will be gutted. Companies don’t pay for redundancy… I’ve seen it too many times. They will keep a few key people, most will be fired. They will likely rebrand...

I think it’s clear why Red would’ve been purchased by Nikon. First internal raw… clearly they’ll be in control of that patent giving them a distinct advantage over all of the other camera manufacturers. Secondly, for the global shutter technology, that has Red has pioneered. Sadly, I don’t...
