  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DaVinci

super bad ass.... But it looks like real time 4k red will cost you 50,000.00 still a good price though. 1K gets you software only.

Now Baselight has no choice, but to finally release their Mac based Baselight, which they had for a few years. It is limited to only Macbook Pro and only clients, who had already purchased full blown Baselight can buy it. I love it, that DaVinci even in $995 software only "The features are absolutely identical, apart from the limitations of using a single GPU based system". Yes, no 4k, no SDI, but an easy way to get onto the ground floor of learning world class color grading. Very interested in seeing it at NAB...
Oh wait, it seems, that Filmlight isn't even at NAB this year...
Do I hear Mac based Lustre?

DaVinci Resolve Software

Software Only

DaVinci Resolve for the Mac is the world’s most advanced color correction as a software only solution compatible
with high performance GPU cards and off the shelf control panels such as the Tangent Wave™.
Includes 32 bit float YRGB processing for all effects, power windows, tracking, primaries and secondaries and 3D object tracker.
You get the a full copy of DaVinci Resolve with no features disabled, so you get a full system, with single GPU performance.
Because DaVinci Resolve Software is a full DaVinci, as GPUs on Mac get faster, your DaVinci Resolve will get faster.
Add supported third party control surfaces and video I/O, devices to let your system grow!
Great first color correction solution when you're working heavily in SD and HD!

Grade raw RED files in realtime!

DaVinci Resolve allows full unlimited grading of raw RED files in real time so you’re not limited by time consuming rendering before grading.
DaVinci Resolve reads and browses files direct from your disk array, SAN or files captured from the video input.
Choose from a huge range of file formats such as native DPX, CIN, QuickTime, DNxHD and native RED R3D in 4K with full de-bayer all in real time.
You can even work with TIFF, JPEG, TGA and BMP and up to 16 channels of audio!

$995

Absolutely fantastic!

A happy Tangent Wave owner!!!!

What?? , Black Magic is having a fire sale it would seem... wonder how much they paid for DaVinci? The latter has to be laughing.

This could be a serious blow to Scratch at this price point if indeed its $50,000 for 4K?

EDIT: Disregard. this price does NOT include GPU and CPU's

Scratch didn't listen when I asked them here for one stripped down low priced version on laptop for about $1K.

Now Foundry upcoming Storm could get it or maybe this new DaVinci Resolve...

Email from Grant :
DaVinci Resolve might be affordable now, but it's still a high end solution, so requires a third party control panel such as the Tangent Wave, and single CUDA capable GPU card. If video I/O is required, then it also requires a DeckLink HD Extreme card. Of course we will work hard to open DaVinci Resolv€e up to other brands of control panel, capture cards and GPUs as fast as we ca

So you can have SDI output from Blackmagic HD Extreme :)

Yep, we all asked for it. Finally, someone did it.

Best way we can support this is by sending them our dollars as soon as possible - which I intend to do pronto!

Incredible... this is exactly what makes me very afraid to buy high end software. Some crazy company can just come out at any time with really low prices... like what happened when Apple bought Silicon Color and acquired FinalTouch.

I don't think that would work for SDI playback. When they say video I/O, they mean an ability to record and layoff from and to tapes. For an SDI they would need to do it directly from something like SDI enabled NVIDIA card.

It was obviously bound to happen sooner than later. 50 to 100k grading suites only make sense when high-end camera accessibility is restricted. There are currently upwards of 7000 RED Ones out there, as well as other HD cameras, and with many others on the horizon (Epic, ARRI, etc.). People are not going to want to pay hundreds of dollars per hour, or dozens of thousands of dollars for a grading suite. Of course, grading expertise still remains priceless...

I dont think so.

Well at least we know with RED that they were already crazy from the git go... what is especially troubling is when a stable conservative company then goes mad.

They have designed the software to scale almost perfectly. Its totally brilliant..
in three steps.

1. Software for Mac. Use a tangent wave and a decklink card and an NVIDIA FX 4800.
2. Upgrade to Resolve hardware, only thing lost is the Tangent wave(B.F.D.)

Then if you want something on par with Pablo, Baselight 4k, and anything else out there.

3. Go buy a LINUX box, 4 x Quadro FX 5800 cards and the software is only $19,995, you already have the control panel from step 2. Gotta buy a LINUX box of course, but that is off the self hardware.

Basically at the end you will have what used to be 200k. Its f****ing brilliant.

It does say next to the linux software that they require you to purchase their control surface, so you're still in for $50,000... But it's still a fantastic deal compared to solutions in the past.

Blackmagic, really does it make it very scalable. You don't really know how much work you can get or how much you can tap into a market until you really have the tools out there for clients to see.

So it like you get the 1k Resolve, you get really busy, upgrading to LINUX down the line will be very easy and very practical. Same interface/workflow, just faster more efficient system. Then again, if you are in the boat like 99% of the post industry, you have to make it work with a Mac Pro with an NIVIDIA FX 4800 card, a 1k software Resolve and a Tangent panel. If you cash cow comes in, your are ready to upgrade.

I mean how scary is it to have a 200k color correction suite that you bought maybe moths ago, or right before NAB or even last year? It makes my stomach drop. It is very scary time for people with gear, but amazing time for those who are trying to wait for the dust to settle, in respect to both work and gear.
