What laptop would you buy now for CS5 in terms of bang for buck and mobility?
HD screen, good speakers....

5 days...

Wait for the new MacBook Pros. Always the best performance in their price bracket and sturdy as hell.

you can also look into companies like alienware, falcon, and so on. they'll provide more desktop replacement specs, along with a more powerful GPU as an option. With cude and mercury, it's gonna be about your gpu now, and it also offers more ram expansion for AE and other programs.

I don't like Apple and their HypePhone, HypePad and HypePod

What? Inferior, more expansive, closed products . Apple is all marketing. I thought this is the Adobe Workflow forum, I wouldn't say this on the FCP forum :-/

Mike, i know what you mean, but don't forget that adobe runs on apples too. If you want to make use of the mercury engine, i don't know if something exists with the supported cards right now. I would wait more time for a gamer machine with a gtx 480 inside. I have to say that i tested CS5 with my dell precission with a quadro 1700 inside and althoug it runs well, it is nothing compared to my workstation with a quadro 4800. If you need it right now this asus machine looks stunning, i would buy one, anyway you won't find any lappie with a supported card right now. I want one of this, really nice and cheap!!!

Well, a 64 bit machine for certain. :) However, I don't think CS5 is RELEASING until October or so, right? This April 12th announcement is just an announcement of features, right? There has been some confusion on that point, but I think this is how it's playing out. By then there might be a better machine.

Oppps, the "ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A1 " doesn't have a Firewire or e-Sata. How slow is USB2 or can I use an external wireless drive? Is this a deal breaker for me??? How much slower is USB2?

Mike if your considering editing off a wireless drive I think you need to do some google research on raid and speeds needed to edit various levels of HD material.

I comes with 1 TB so I don't need to edit off, but for backups etc...

No. Unless your offlining very small proxies.
Your going to be looking at something that hooks up through the expresscard like the Caldigit array or something similar.

That's the problem, this laptop doesn't come with a expresscard or firewire. So what I'm asking, is this a deal breaker? I could just edit on the 1TB it comes with and use the USB2 for backups etc, right? Or is UBS2 very very slow?

I'm really trying to avoid buying a desktop....

Yes it would be for me anyway.

As much as you may hate it, without fanboyism ion my part for your budget (Im guessing under 2k) a 2nd hand Macbook Pro is the most appropriate solution. If it was higher you'd have options but then you might as well get a desktop that would be 10x more powerful.

Think about getting a small laptop and a powerful desktop maybe?

The 1tb will be too slow btw. Its raided but will still leave you cutting 1 stream of prores before you get too slow.

I'll be honest with you, it has nothing to do with budget... I just hate apple and I don't want to switch. If I buy a desktop I will have to throw it away after 6 month because I'm just going to stay in the US for this one project, for 6 month, and then get back to Europe.... and I will be shooting on a 5D, so... How many MG is 1 minute of 1080 HD anyway? 150 MB?

Just put my upgrade order in for CS5 premium collection and apparently it will ship early May.
