  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC Schedule Update...

True, maybe I just hoped that was subject to change and counted on that ;)
It would be cool to have Epic for A cam and R1 M-X for B cam.

Cheers

So Scarlet is the trail of the big Epic comet approaching planet earth. I think all old film (Celluloid) dinosaurs have to watch out for the impact!

Or for those of us that love film, we could get the Penelope instead and have the best of both worlds.

Don't take me as a RED hater or anything, since I do love shooting on it, but at the end of the day it's still a camera, still a tool. Like any job, you need the right tool for the job, and my personal preference is to use film.

I have a portfolio project coming up in my 3rd year of school, and we're shooting about 2/3's of the film on film, and the rest on RED.

Any idea about the timing of FF35 (Monstro) Epic and Scarlet?

This is great!
However, I have deiced to get a fully rigged Scarlet 2/3", and a fully rigged Scarlet S35 (opposed to a barebones epic).

I'm with Sterling Jim. We GREATLY appreciate the Epic effort and know the technology for Scarlet and Epic run parallel in many respects. For our part here at Mad Media - as much as we have loved and used the hell out of RED this past year - we are desperate for a 4K, multiple-frame rate, full sensor, ENG solution. (The 5D /HDSLR stuff is OK - but has a lot of shortcomings - the most glaring of which is a true HD out monitoring solution and built-in audio monitoring solution). Meaning the fully outfitted RED is often too cumbersome to quickly move/set-up or allow for a single operator. We're big proponents of using the right tool for the right job/shot/situation...So we can't wait for both the fixed and PL versions of the Scarlet. We will literally be buying 3-4 of them right off the bat! SO - keep up the great work. Every time we pull the RED out - (we used three of them to shoot the recent Mint 400 race) people instantly understand we're serious about our shooting. The results of coarse are...remarkable. THANSK!!! -Joshua

Jim, I notice Epic-X comes with a PL mount. For those of us with an investment in stills lenses, will Canon and Nikon mounts ship at the same time as the Epic-X or do you expect a delay? Thanks.

Same time...

Fantastic. Thanks Jim. One more question (sorry). Will the Epic ship with touch screen focussing working or will that come with a later firmware update? Can't wait to get me some of that 5k 120fps touch focus goodness!

EDIT: Sorry, answered on another thread.

Awesome new, Congrats Jim and the team!

Heres a long shot.

Will there be any sort of discount for students :emote_couch:

Jono

Hahahaha. I would have killed to have this system while I was at USC...these are the student prices. Are you kidding? I love Jim...and to think I was so skeptical in the beginning.

God, I cant wait for Stage 3 to get here, I need a light at the end of this epic tunnel.

Does anyone know if the the Long Valley Red Nikon mount will work on Epic?

As Larry said, no it won't. This is because the DSMC system has a new, more robust lens mount system (it connects with four bolts instead of the little screws that the RED ONE has), which won't be compatible.

But RED are making a locking, electronic Nikon and Canon mounts. It should be a lot better than current 3rd party solutions because it will work with autofocus. If I remember correctly the mounts are $500, but the electronic ones might have been a little more.

You just made up my mind about the MX upgrade for me. Not gonna do it, wouldn't be prudent, not at this juncture.
Mark, just made up my mind as well, but in an opposite direction. Will definitely upgrade my R-1 so the footage will match the Epic X.

What details of the Stage 3 upgrade path changed since this post.

http://red.cachefly.net/A/OctoberPost.jpg

I have a RED ONE and will be trading it in for an epic using the stage 3 upgrade path, but I am wondering, have things changed since this post? Do we only get the epic brain for the trade in or do we the still get the epic-x package mentioned in this post?
