I knew the answer to this question before I even thought about asking it. But, here it goes...

Could a RED employee (or anyone else who happens to have it) post the "Izzy" R3D?
An obvious question would be "why?".
I know the specs have changed.
I know the compression will be better. (REDCODE 100)
I know that "Izzy" would not adequately represent DSMC (or maybe it would, I haven't seen the R3D.)

I only ask this because I want a RAW 100% 3K view of the DOF.
I WILL, without a doubt buy the 2/3" and S35 Scarlets. However, I'm shooting a short around August and I need to know if the 2/3" scarlet will have an acceptable DOF for this production. If not I will most likely rent a R1. Because of my relatively remote location, I MUST know if a camera will need to be rented months in advance. Everyone's watched "Izzy" I don't see how a R3D would hurt.

P.S. If Blackie, Lucy, or Desi is a 2/3" prototype, that we'll be seeing at NAB, feel free to tell me to shut up and wait!:biggrinjester:

How will one closeup of a lizard be more helpful then watching the countless films that have been shot on 2/3" cameras?

Public Enemies
Miami Vice
Collateral
Benjamin Button
Zodiac
Sin City
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Etc...

A macro shot of a lizard of indeterminable dimensions on a black background isn't exactly the first thing that would come to mind when wanting to see the DOF characteristics of a sensor. :001_tongue:

Hehe. I also wonder wich is wich of Blackie, Lucy, or Desi prototype. Hopefully Las Vegas brings some good news or maby even footage!

I have a 2/3 camera and I can say I've never longed for a shallower depth of field, especially if you have fast lenses. Matter of fact, I find the depth of field to be very nice. I've even been able to get a ton of good shots pulling my own focus.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I always thought having faster lenses would allow you to increase the DOF as the aperture (given an average lighting scene and 180 degree shutter angle) would be further closed down. Have I misunderstood how this works?

As I remember it, IZZY was just a 720p screen capture off the test bed monitor output. Not even close to 3k resolution.

Yeah and it's really premature to be talking about a camera no one knows when we'll actually be able to buy. I'm guessing it will be more than up to yours and just about everyone else's expectations though...

The speed of the lens has less to do with shallow depth of field. Apparent depth of field is much more dependent on the resolving size of the frame- bigger= more shallow. That's why 35mm and 4K look shallow and 2/3" video cameras don't.

I still think a lot of shooters will be a bit amazed at how hard it is to keep focus on a big sensor without a dedicated focus puller, especially in lower light where the aperture is wide open.

Check your depth of field charts and see just how shallow the depth is, when the chart shows your depth at only a few inches, then it'll start to dawn on you how hard it will be to operate the camera and focus by yourself,.. something you can probably do with a 2/3 camera though.

:attention9ha:

yep read up there :001_rolleyes:

I thought Collateral worked, picture-wise and story-wise. Benjamin Button too. Maybe it's subliminal pre-disposed appreciation though since I have a Viper.
