  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Schedule Update?

Hi Jonathan,

There have been a few posts after Red Day, but here is a recap:

1. Tattoo program hasn't started yet, and has been reduced from about 100 to about 20 or so.

2. After Tattoo happens, they hope to be able to release Epics after about 2 months.

3. There is no release date, but Jim mentioned that he will be feeling the pressure if it doesn't happen by Summer (July/August,) though he later clarified this shouldn't be confused with the suggestion of a release date.

That's about it. Things are happening and it's going to be great, but we're still waiting for actual information.

Jim

So is there anyone who realistically expects the Scarlet to be released before 2011?

I do, and I am pretty cynical and impatient.

I am really torn about the red one owners first thing. I understand people took a chance early on with red, and i understand gratitude. On the other hand I understand the "Old Boys Club" and "Rich get Richer" business models as well.

If its a week or two to wait for red one owners to have first crack, that is ok, it it is months, that might irritate me too much to want to play that game. I believe in supporting customers, but not in barriers to new customers.

all I am saying is I think it should be this summer, unless the roll out is all kinds of weird and uneven.

I can't imagine it won't be out before 2011. They were shooting for may/june so I would expect late summer.

I don't think RED is playing any kind of game. They are going to make Scarlet in volume but they couldn't be blamed if they sent out a couple hundred Scarlets and waited a month or two for feedback before they released thousands. Do you really send out 5000 units the first week and hope the first production run was flawless? It's not my business to know for sure, but it sounds risky to me.

Ultimately RED has said Scarlet will be mass produced - unlike RED One.

Relax! Jim stated there will be plenty of cameras for everyone and the wait won't be long.

Look at the bright side theres always a 7D :Angel_anim:

Everyone keeps saying relax! typed words intrinsically have a passive aggressive tone, or a tone we project on them. I am calm.

That said, I think I misrepresented myself about the "Red Game". I think a beta release is awesome. I think letting the first filled orders be for Red One owners is fine. All their prerogative and right.

But imagine if its like the M-X upgrade, and slowly each R1 owner gets and email, then decides, then calls... Weeks and Weeks go by. Months...

*A lone tear falls and splashes on my desk*

just kidding, i am not even sitting at a desk!

Jeff

I can see them doing a small first production run that will go mostly to existing Red customers, including major rental houses. Sort of a production QC check. But as soon as production is fully ramped up the flood gates will open.
I hope the 2/3" cinema model won't be far behind the fixed version.

David,

what mount and lens are you thinking for the cinema version?

Let me guess, you own some badass PL mount glass already, making that the no brainer decision?

From what I remember, once R1 owners receive the email they will have 30 days to decide. So this should speed up the process...

I think that giving the existing RED users precedence in order of their delivery dates is getting a bit past its prime too - I mean, obviously these people put down a large investment in RED when everybody was calling them a scam, but there are a lot of people that did believe in RED since those days and weren't in a position to buy.

That's not to say that RED ONE owners don't deserve special treatment, but given that they've enjoyed so much special treatment and are now getting the incredible upgrade program and exclusive access to EPIC-X that maybe for Scarlet it's time to go back to a first come, first served system that's a bit more universally fair to everyone...

The current way just seems a bit hostile to new customers really...

I agree with this, there seems to be some people in the forum that seem to be quite cynical of the company and the potential products to be released (which makes me wonder why they joined in the first place). At least with a 'first come first served' policy people who are genuinly going to put their money on the table are going to be filtered out of those who are going to be offered an opportunity to purchase, and then take 30 days to think about it....

But then, I only joined the end of last year, so this point of view is entirely self serving to try and get an S35 in my hands quicker! :drool5:

I first heard about the RED1 and started browsing this forum around September 2007. The Scarlet camera had me hooked immediately and I became unwilling to settle for anything less. But had I been able to read tea-leaves and foresee that the wait for the new Scarlet camera would have been delayed so long I would have saved for and raised the money for the R1 probably being able to buy by mid to late 2008.

I have to be clear and state that I genuinely believe that this delay is not any type of intentional conspiracy etc etc on RED's part and that this new Scarlet/Epic system they are developing probably is the best thing that will ever happen to the mid-budget Indy film industry for a long time to come. In fact I really have to agree that getting it right first time is vital for mass acceptance amongst their major target buyers (re: scarlet anyway, epic owners will know the score)

But I do feel have to second Stephen G's comment in that I suspect there are many of us who hestitated to invest in the R1 some time ago believing that the scarlet was only months from release and now find themselves trapped in the unknown release window between the larger expense of the R1 and the scarlet and feel slightly penalised for being in the not-so-well-off-we-can-justify-investing-in-the-R1MX-so late-in-the-game club

I don't remember anyone saying anything like that (at least, not in this thread)...

My decision not to invest in the RED ONE was purely a financial one, not anything to do with Scarlet (in fact, I've been on these forums and DVXUser's RED forums since long before even the R1 was released). I just haven't had the funds to drop $30K into a camera package. That's why I'm totally pumped about Scarlet - and I don't mind waiting, since it's only got better and better since the early announcements. I'd just like to see them open the floodgates when Scarlet's released since the existing owners already have first crack on the EPICs and have enjoyed many privileges in the past...

The early announcement of a potential Scarlet caused me to wait and not to run out and by an HVX or EX-1. As an independent film guy, without strong commercial income to justify a huge purchase, I couldn't considered plunking down 25K for a Red One. Could all the Scarlet yearning caused RED sales of Red One? It looks like it. Interesting. But with all the waiting for Scarlet, I don't wait to shoot. I shot last with an EX-1 and will rent a RED for another in June. When I'm shooting with an S35 that I own, that RED rental is lost to the RED ONE owner. I just don't think it's such a big deal that RED ONE guys get first shot at purchasing Scarlet. Like a lot of folks, I'm not holding up projects, but I am definitely waiting to purchase.

I really hope Scarlet gets released by June. But it doesn't seem too likely.

Hi Stephen, this is the only part of your post I was reflecting upon. Though reading retrospectively I can see how I may have been misunderstood

"I think that giving the existing RED users precedence in order of their delivery dates is getting a bit past its prime"

There is another thread, think its 'Future of the RED one' with another reduser who has inferred the delays may be deliberate.

Really? I just re-read it and missed that entirely. Maybe you're thinking of another thread.
