Zone Plate 7D

Not that it really matters since this is all about electronic cinema, but how do the 5D and 7D perform with the zone plate test when shooting in still mode? Some of us do a lot of time-lapse with DSLR's and when shooting still-frame intervals our work in effect becomes cinema. My concern has always been how well it will cut together with the Red.

You can't really compare time lapses with video mode. Time lapses can be shot in higher resolution than video on either 5d or 7d. Time lapses might hold up well with Red footage. Video is another story.

Its funny that the Fire Chief initiated this thread. He is supposed to put out the fires not start 'em !

Jim, please post the same crop off a MX sensor, which is already available.

good idea..

Here is a triple crop of the 2k Circles of the chart.. Canon 7D, Sony F35, and RED ONE M-X

click for full size:

The crop is very 'lol' worthy. 7d having an lsd moment.
Its a nice standard def cam. Mostly, I love the dynamic range.

You should add a 5d to the mix.

What's with the green shift (Red MX) at the higher frequencies?

I also agree with Issac B. I don't mean to sound negative, but I don't what you (or anyone else for that matter) hope to achieve by comparing a $1700 prosumer STILL camera to $17,000+ professional MOTION PICTURE CAMERA. Seems like a waste of time. Although a lot of people seem to make those comparisons (god knows why), I just thought you guys would know better/be above all that. Like people say, break out the Scarlet and the 7D & 5D will be a thing of the past.

We are not above giving out info. We have been posting and presenting a case for 4K finish and delivery. People need to know why. Why aren't we above posting what the best 1080P camera (F35) can do? It is a great camera and a good reference.

This test showcases the difference between line-skipping 1080P, real 1080P and 4K.

It's nice to see. I have a 5d and RED. A controlled environment better describes what may be difficult to when shooting and comparing in the 'real world'. Not a waste of time to me as I like to understand how my cameras perform and why they perform certain ways.

Thanks for posting.

Touché  It is indeed the best 1080p camera. Didn't think of it that way. I just bought a 7D, but I take stills also, and it is my first DSLR. Transitioning from medium format and 35mm. Even though I bought if for stills, with all the extra stuff I got for video I kept thinking; "Man! I wish I was buying a Scarlet!!!"

I would say that 2k F35 vs MX is the most informative.

Supposedly "equal" footing: both supersample to achieve 2k. RED's approach except for the green shift would seem to be the clear winner.

Seeing a zone plate like this is what made me decide not to get a 7D. A 550d on the other hand... I think this kind of quality is worth about 800 bucks -- not 1500.

I totally agree that the 7D isn't $1500 worth of video camera. I'm not even sure it's $800 worth of video camera. Which would be a problem if it was a video camera.

However I think it IS $1500 worth of still camera.

So I kinda think of it as a prosumer still camera for $1500, with a somewhat passable consumer video camera thrown in for free.

I think he was referring to the F35 as the best 1080p camera. :)

Call it... consumer 1080, professional 1080, 4k.
