as promised..

one is the R1 at 2000 asa on the 18-50mm wide open and the other one is my new M-X enabled R1 at 2000 asa, same day, same lens, shot about 20 minutes apart from eachother...last thursday night. i am working so i will post more info about this later and more shots, hope my servers doesn't break.

I did nothing other than make prores HQ files scaled to 2240 x 960 from the 4480 x 1920 ; then in qt, exported to h.264 at half of that 1120 x 480. not crushing, s curve or anything.

I have included pictures of the Qt Export settings...

warning....this footage is not exciting. just shot with the two different sensors.

That's a pretty dramatic difference. Looking at the noise in the nighttime sky, it's pretty stunning. The hazy/smoggy sky that we have in LA being lit by the city always seems to be the bane of CMOS sensors noise-wise since it usually falls in the lows, but just enough to be visible. Shooting the Kings & Queens video on the R1, 7D & 5D... every sky needed to be replaced because of this.

Cool stuff, Dino.

Funny this is the exact spot I shot a test for Green Hornet shooting anamorphic push one stop tests on 5219 and 5229.
Even though it is a simple test it is appreciated and shows a big difference between the 2 sensors. Thanks for taking the time to post for us.

Wow!!!

The MX loosk so much brighter, but you still have detail in the ROME sign that is completely blown out on the M. Plus no noise and there is lots of color in the MX.

The northern lights looking lens flare from the headlights on the MX is interesting, but there is over all less flare than the M sensor, maybe its just the angle.

Thanks for the footage.

What software and settings did you use to process the Red footage? Redcine-X, Clipfinder, etc REDspace, REDcolor, REDgamma, etc?

Dusty

It's surprising that the MX file is smaller than the R1 file and yet longer in duration. What were the R3D's like?

thanks for posting btw.

Great!!

Here below is one of my night street examples shot on R1-M year and half ago on build 16 with Leica Noctilux-M 50mm F/1.0 (the lens version from 70s) wide open with all types flare artifacts involved that should be expected from the lens old like this and with FF35mm circle size.

So the speed of the lens could be T.1.1 that is faster than any cine lens available to purchase.

I can imagine how will look amazingly crisp, sharp and without flare artifacts to shoot with M-X @ T2.1 or T2.9 with the same lens (brand new Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 aspherical lens)

That means the new RED Color Science improved enormously and new M-X sensor could be really faster 1 to 1.5 stop than older M.

Also my future testing with Noctilux speed lenses will give us a "feeling" of the next generation RED sensor a.k.a Monstro.

Stay tuned.

REDCINE-X custom set up for this shot on R1 with Leica Noctilux-M F/1.0, ISO 320,...

Two years old footage shot with build 16 processed in REDCINE-X, ISO 320, FLUT™ 1.1, 83 MB>>>

Wow. It's like a veil being lifted with the MX shots. Thanks for shooting & posting Dino!

Weird flare?

Weird flare?

First off, WOW, the noise in the blacks is immensely improved, the detail is spectacular. Look how the sensor is handling the different color temperatures from all the lights, impressive.

What is that weird flare happening off the headlights int he MX sensor in the second video?

Thanks Dino!!!

Im curious about the tinting difference between them, that surprises me. Were white balances identical?

Yikes! This is awesome! Thanks.

there was a bit of purple tinge in the MX footy. Could likely be the calibration issue that they are working on fixing that Jim mentioned in a previous thread.

Could the calibration issue be what is causing this weird flare off the headlights? Never seen this before.

Off Topic: I had a feeling that video was shot on the Red One and one of the Canons. They all had that look but I wasn't entirely sure because the video was so clean. Good video by the way.

On Topic: I am loving the way the new MX sensor is handling noise. It seems to act a lot more like film grain than video noise. Its not nearly as chunky or ugly looking. Cannot wait for Scarlet!

to speak to the color tint issue, i white balanced both cameras on the day, not by using a white card, but merely by white balancing to the composition, MX sensor read 3366 with a +9 tint, R1 sensor was 2849 with zero tint. i will redo these quick times at both settings, so one pass using R1 metadata, and one with pass using MX data.

Looks like a lens flare for sure.

There seems to be a purple light source to the left of the frame. You can see it from the way the purple light wraps around the guy on the left sidewalk.
