  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Need custom cable for Decimator (will pay OC)

we use the "d-tap hub" all the day with the following setup:

- ARRI Follow Focus
- Heater for the EVF
- Canatrans
- AJA downconverter

what eric said - it works very well, but you are really burning fuel with this setup regarding the batteries ;-)

(we have a double-v-mount adapter)

best wishes,
martin

Gents:

You can buy D-tap cables directly from the US distributer, TECADS:

Other Decimator cables (to any standard Lemo, Steadicam, D-tap etc) are being built to order by Terry West, 310-374-5711.

To answer Lewis' query about manufacturers not supplying accessories, I can't speak for all of them but I do know that the Decimator was not built specifically for portable use, it was designed and assumed to be used stuck behind a monitor or in a rack somewhere (hence the inclusion of the never-used rackmount tab, and the AC adaptor). It seems funny considering its size and weight, but there you go--lucky accident and that's why I jumped on the unit when it was in pre-release and got involved with the company. Which, incidentally, is no longer called Redbyte Designs but Decimator Designs--that tells you how popular that product line has been!

At least the Decimator can take a full range of standard voltages. It's been much more of a struggle dealing with the Blackmagic or AJA HDMI converter boxes when working with the Canon DSLR's--neither can take the voltage of a hot 14.4v battery without regulation (12v for the BM, 5v for the AJA).

If anyone has thoughts, concerns, ideas etc. about the Decimator products, please contact me. Incidentally, the latest unit, the MD Quad, is exceptionally cool for those using HDMI monitors for production and needing to switch between multiple inputs (2, 3 or 4 camera shoots); it can cycle between cameras and also display all four as a quad split, while converting all of their HD-SDI inputs down to HDMI, or even SD if required. VERY helpful for color matching.

Am I the only one that wishes they had put a different kind of plug on the Decimator? :-)

A while back I passed on my request to the factory that a version of the Decimator be made available with Lemo connector. It would be at a higher price point, but I think that a reasonable percentage of users would prefer it. Once again, because of the original intent for this unit to live in a non-portable environment, the connector wasn't designed for multiple insertions such as we typically subject it to.

Thanks for the clarification Charles!

I see that like many manufacturers orbiting around the Red program, you have made a useful tool that has found new markets and use. Indeed, the portability of the Decimator is an amazing market and wonderful idea. It works perfectly with my Red and SD monitors, whether plugged in or HF transmitted, especially that I now have the perfect Dtap cable for it.

Your another victim of success. If you ever made a special "Red" friendly version of the decimator, with proper attachment/clipping device (like a bracket for 19mm rods or for the Red side handle, mine is velcroed to it) and power solution, I'm sure this will only get "worse"... :)
