Hey RED Team,

With Apple's announcement yesterday of a 10 inch, .5 inch thin, 1.5 pound multi-touch tablet that can run any apps created for it, my first thought was you guys. What if RED created an iPad Application and sold an accessory that allowed people to use a 499 iPad as an LCD display? Touch focus would obviously be able to work as the device is multitouch. Perhaps you could even sell a mount that allowed users to mount it on their camera.

Just some suggestions, take them or leave them. I plan to buy a Scarlet when it comes out, but despite the obvious appeal of your LCD displays, don't plan on buying one for high cost. I feel like the iPad could prove to be a great solution for those who are really stretching financially to buy one of these new cameras.

Touch focus is a extremely expensive option,

I can already do the monitoring from my iphone if my DIT system is setup. However the Ipad's screen is much larger making it more desirable for a handheld waveform / DIT system control / Stills Preview.

Alex, isn't touch focus with certain lenses (RED electronic ones, Nikons, etc) supposed to be possible, without any additional cost for Epic/Scarlet cameras?

It is. But how would you get a live-view from the camera onto the iPad so that you could use the touchfocus without too much delay? Via WiFi? Just curious.

There are things that can be done and ways to get them done. I already have a plan.

I mentioned it last night in an earlier post. To get live video over vnc through HD-sdi on a DIT station, the ipad doesn't even need to be hacked to do this. My purposes would be for Color not playback or constant playback, I would never get that. But if I could enable recording on 3cP from across the stage, check waveform, color the image with a preset or known values, and output it to HD-SDi monitors connected to me, all while I'm standing next to the DP at the Camera. I do this with my iphone now, I want a bigger screen

Honestly for focus pulling in general I want my hand as close to that lens as possible, I look at a monitor when I get a chance, but its hard to anticipate if you are not watching the action, instead of looking at a monitor.

All the tools are out there right now to already use the ipad for dailies and for a live feed as soon as it's released. We've been doing dailies on ipods (ipoddailies.com) for years at this point, and ipaddailies.com will just be an expansion of this. The tools to do a live video assist can be setup so that anyone with a pc/mac or ipod/ipad can watch a live stream. I don't know yet if I'll be able to attend the Feb REDuser event, but at the January 16th event, we were demoing dailies using ipods/iphones and other common tools.

i would love the ipad to be a live video assist, it would be such an amazing tool. i'll check the website above out.

I'm not suggesting Wi-Fi streaming for the iPad with RED... I'm suggesting that RED creates a 30-pin adapter so that it plugs directly into the device, and then designs an iPhone application to display the video and control the camera with the touchscreen.

What would get me more fired up is an App that makes the iPad a smart slate of sorts where you could really take advantage of that screen real-estate and keyboard to input data regarding the shot/scene. Think of: a little iPhone-OS scroll wheel with lens focal lengths on it, lens height, frame-rate, scene, take, director, DP, Camera OP, A-Cam, etc., etc. Then hold this in front of the camera at roll (for visual backup) and click a little button so that this metadata is transmitted via WiFi to the camera of your choosing to include with the clip.

That would be a KILLER app!

iPad+RED is a seriously exciting possibility. RED could create a mega app that allowed for metadata to be stored, it could convert to a timecode slate, and then allow you to focus, record and playback footage all from a tablet that (supposedly) has a 10 hour battery life. If RED takes advantage of this exciting new world, we will all be in for a real treat.

RED Team... Please make some iPad apps!!!

Third party opportunities ahead.

honestly the idea of using it as a smart slate and other red-related tools is the only reason i'm even remotely interested in this device. Until reading these posts the thing sounded completely useless to me. Still on the edge of useless though...

So far as I know there is multi stream video streaming possible but much of it is still in the labs in development. If any one is interested I can put you in touch with one University and company developing the technology. I have no connection with them other than knowing of the project.

I would probably like to see,

Slate, storyboard, 'look' creator (so take a jpeg, upload it, create the look, download the look to an SD and offload to the RED), a render viewer (so something like the RED Render app that is connectable online to see the remaining time and errors for the renders.)

Color/white balance card? (becomes inexpensive too!)

Shotgun (they I think are already on the ball)

FuzeMovie mini?

REDUser app :P

Follow focus app (like the one out there but more to it, re-designed interface perhaps for the iPad?)

Film Locations app (would be great for finding film locations and who to contact etc. straight off an app)

How cool would touch-sensitive scopes be?

It already exists Brooke, I can hit the digital spot meter from across the set on my iphone. And much much more, I just wanted a bigger screen or Ipad. I would get one right away, AS soon as another VNC will be available for it Its going to be extremely powerful on set.

The technology has existed for almost 20 years already. VNC means remote control for any workstation / system connected to a network. If you are not actively using this protocol among networked computers, Its time to learn. This is how my TV server is setup and hooked to the big screen and accessed from any system on the Network as a controller or a Library of content.
