  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OFFHOLLYWOOD shoots MX ISO 1600

Thanks Mark, can't wait to watch - still downloading..

Wow! The fact that you can make out the buildings from the skyline from that distance is just amazing... If the Mysterium-X preforms this type of magic in the Scarlet cameras, I will be one happy guy!

well is there anything inhibiting it from doing so?

Really impressive stuff.

How does the noise / color hold up if you pull the white balance to more cool tones rather than the orange from the sodium lights?

Can't wait to get mine upgraded... Too bad there's like another 1000 people in line ahead of me. Oh well.

I am gearing up for a DP job end of February... really wish scarlet was here so I didn't have to use the clients HVX. These cameras, whatever your price point, also provide something more esoteric but incredibly important. The ability to overcome a clients limitations by bringing along the most powerful tools at an affordable cost. I would bring my future scarlet along for free if it meant avoiding the HVX, or similar... not that they aren't nice... for their target group. Scarlet lands price-wise in that same group, but (even if its half as successful as this test) it might as well be from another universe.

heh heh.. RED 4K (REDray) can't come soon enough...

Good Job Mark.. you and the entire Offhollywood crew have sure come along way.

After reading the 7 pages here, I was trying to imagine what I was about to see. I was not prepared.

To hell with worrying about sounding like a fanboy- Red has done something truly extraordinary. AGAIN. The possibilities that this opens up are vast and delicious.

Thanks for posting, Mark. Your cameras are all grown up and gorgeous!

finally watched this.. MIND BOGGLING.. I have an urge to see your 2K version. Is this a possibility? I have a server you can upload to if you're interested..

Is there any camera that can record cool tones in sodium vapor light? I guess it depends on the specific light fixture but if it's low pressure sodium, it's pretty much just the yellow, period... no visible blue component at all. If a camera can generate anything but yellow out of this spectrum, it's inventing that color out of whole cloth, so to speak.

Thanks OH for passing these tests along.

Looking at this footage I'm sure this is what Michael Mann was after
when he directed "Collateral".

The shots going across the bridge (Brooklynn?) and looking down the East River were particularly impressive.

No rolling shutter on the passing beams and amazing detail captured throughout. It looks like you could actually make out details inside the passing apartments.

I'm surprised that the image is this tight with smooth looking gradations in light (reflections in the river) at such a high ISO.

One question?
How are the slow shutter speeds on the new sensor?
Can it be held open for long periods (1 sec +) for time lapse photography.

Thanks for these test.

Great to see this footage, thank you. I've been planning to upgrade my sensor and this seals it for sure. Now to scare up some spare cash...

Mark,

I'm really wondering wether the 1600 ASA you mentioned are "realworld" lightmeter ASA or Red legacy SDK ASA.
Including build 21, a RedOne has approx. 160-200 ASA sensitivity when using a lightmeter and a meaningful histogram is desired.

With the new sensor and the new SDK I'm curious wether lightmeter ASA and camera/SDK ASA finally match. Or putting it differently: Do your think that setting my lightmeter to 800 ASA will lead to a similar result when using an "old" RedOne with the lightmeter set to 200 ASA?

Is this mismatch fixed?

Either way your lowlight shots are impressive.

Thanks for sharing,

Hans

Amazing!!!

Absolutely fantastic!!!

Thanks Mark and OffHollywood!!!

After this example shot I saw now it means that HD DSLRs shooting at the high ISO is all already a "dead story"!!!

Also Arri and Michael Bravin are in a panic and they are looking forward TO CATCH a sort of "Tangential Touch" between Arri Alexa Alev III and R1/Epic M-X in HIGH ISO sensitivity at available light...

But we just have to see that COMPARISON pretty soon...

One more thing is that when I upscaled the M-X 1K footage to the full screen of 30" Apple Cinema Display I can't see any noise except those of H264 compression artifacts!!!

I'm looking forward to test my R1 with Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/.95 (T1.0) and Cosina Voigtländer Nokton-M 50mm f/1.1 (T1.1) in available light at night...
