Could be anywhere in the world today.
Man I wish these EPIC's would come out already!!!

It's like Canon are smashing it with those 5d's, everyone I know has raced out and bought one. They must have sold tens of thousands of them already.

I even had a major client ask me if I could shoot there AD on one.... sheeessh.
One minute 35mm film, next minute a canon stills camera that shoots video!!.

If only they new the truth about it only being a H264 quicktime with no range to it,
but they seem not to care.

O well, thats the future i suppose.

It's almost like if you cant beat them join them.
Like Betacam and VHS, the better of the two lost out big time.

Come on boys, get these puppies out now, I don't want to end up shooting some 8 bit video camera.

Well actually, if you're going to use the analogy of Beta vs. VHS it's important to remember that while Beta lost out for the consumer market, it cornered and took over the professional market and is still in use today. So, that being the case, what you might be witnessing is the 5D (in video mode at least) becoming the consumer/(somewhat) prosumer choice and RED becoming a very dominating professional choice.

And let's give credit where credit is due, the 5D is a terrific product at a killer price point, so of course they've sold thousands of them. Just like many moons ago when VHS players were selling by the tens of thousands. So, no biggie. Relax. Just be thankful we have as many choices as we do today!

I too don't get this whole 5D-thing. Even on the latest issue of AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER there's a piece about them and how they're going to change things. Just because of the shallow DOF I ask?

Mark, it was Betamax that competed against VHS. Betacam was always a professional format.

Betamax was much better, but even way back then Sony was shooting themselves in the foot with restrictive licensing terms and costs.

One of the primary reasons VHS won was that Sony wouldn't allow, uh, "adult" films to be distributed on their hallowed format.

Let's not forget the more mature analog video formats that rode off into the sunset, Panasonic MII and the even more obscure W-VHS.

My only concern is that teh 5D will lower standards, much like fast food chains have lowered food standards in the U.S. and Canada.

People can and will get used to crap, and then they won't want to pay for our cinematographical high cuisine anymore.

There is always a place for high quality in every industry. Just make sure you are not delivering high priced crap v's their low price crap.

I remember loading a Mitchell 35mm camera many years ago while the first AC and DP were discussing how 16mm was a plague on the industry.

You can not possibly get the standards any lower than they are now.

How about a 4K version of this?

I wouldn't be that dramatic guys. Personally, I am just at least confused by hearing the same people who were bashing formats such as HDV for its bitrate or color sampling and then praising a tool that shoots in an even more compressed format.

I agree when you say that standards couldn't get any lower. I've started on the 3/4" U-MATIC format, pre NLE age, when a 3 VTR, switcher, CG, DVE, wave/vector, audio mixer and a bunch of monitors were needed. A decent finishing system could cost you up to 7 digit, not to mention cameras, my beloved Ikegami HL79 cost me almost more than my BMW those days.
With the BETACAM SP things just got worst because the BVW VTRs were even more expensive than the older 3/4" BVUs, also those Ampex ADO systems were a fortune.

Nowadays, one of my trainees can just buy a $5K camera, put together a PC that costs under 1 grant and knock at my customer's door offering his services...

Wasn't it Betamax vs. VHS, or maybe Betacam vs. M ?

Does anyone remember the M format?

Sounds very close to my path starting in the early 80's. Cut my teeth on a Ikegami 79a. great camera. Went Mii instead of Betacam. Biggest mistake I ever made. And yes, any clown with a camera and a computer is a pro.

But I'm still here and doing well. Ain't life grand.

I have to disagree with the whingers complaining about the new tech on offer, Canon knows where the money is to be made, many students, wildlife shooters, B cam, soccer mums, divers etc. can all afford this new tech NOW, it's pretty good stuff IMO. I believe a lot of people have large amounts of $$$ invested in the industry with outdated equipment and are too willing to hang shit on the new stuff coming out. Times are changing rapidly, you can go with the flow or stay in the dark ages and whinge and bitch about it....meanwhile the pimply faced kid next door with his $4000 outfit just took *your* contract and is profiting more because of less overheads.
Sure the standards will be lower but the consumer is the market which really depicts the pricing point of the visions worth and it seems quality is not a priority at present

I don´t understand the problem, of course neither of the dSLRs offer the same picture quality. Cameras are just tools, use them for their advantages (in case of dSLRs its their price and size etc). They will for instance allow you to shoot many places where its not possible or practical to shoot with a big camera rig.

Look what kids are getting out of them http://vimeo.com/7764570

I´m waiting for Scarlet S35 but just bought a Canon 7D and having no previous experience with 35mm film or bigger sensors I find it really useful to learn how "bigger" sensors behaves on different glass, apertures, focus, DoF etc etc..
