Okay - now I am getting really confused.

I have decided on a stage three upgrade. My guess is that by the summer or fall I may be in line to get my Epic X.

So in the interim - in order to have a camera that is current (i.e not obsolete) - I will need to pay $5750 for an upgrade to a camera that I am going to be trading in in a few months?

Why am I trading the camera in (for $10500)? Well - equal parts new sensor/new modular system.

So now it seems like I am paying for the new sensor twice?

What am I missing?

Not trying to seem ingrateful, I have always felt the upgrade programs to be very fairly laid out.

This doesn't seem that way though.

If you plan on trading the camera in, why would you upgrade the sensor? Don't think your R1 will be obsolete but what do I know of the future...

Because I want the best available R1 sensor to shoot with.

It seems the only way for me to do this is to pay twice, no?

Yes, it does... or take the sensor out before you trade in. Maybe they won't notice:biggrin5:

Hi Dylan, as Jon suggests, I'm curious why would you upgrade other than you think it's worth having the M-X sensor for x number of months? It might be worth it if a major project would greatly benefit. Or you wanted to keep your Red.

If it's any consolation, I believe the price for the sensor upgrade is $4,500 -- not $5,750. Or maybe I've missed something. Maybe someone can confirm.

And of course, none of us really can predict how the output of cameras will go or exactly when any of it will be available just yet. My guess is the sensor upgrade program will be most attractive for those with scheduled major projects and those who opt for stage 2 and want to keep their Red 1.

If you always want to own the best available technology, isn't the only way to continually buy it as it is released? I'm not trying to be an ass or anything, but it sounds like RED is basically charging a $4500 rental fee for the M-X sensor. If it takes 6 months for you to get your Epic, it might be worth it to you. It's probably not worth it for me.

I think it's primarily worthwhile if you're Stage 2, keeping your RED...

...otherwise you do it because you think it will make the $$ back in the unknown number of months between now and your EPIC delivery...

I guess it all depends on the finalised rollout schedule, and on whether you really need that MX sensor for a couple of months before EPIC. If you and the camera are out solidly on good projects it would probably be worth the money.

You are right Julio. I do want the best available and that is why I am prepared to pay the EPIC-X upgrade. I didn't expect that they would release the sensor upgrade first. As I said - it is just a bit of a drag to have to pay for the upgrade twice.

I'll get over it...

Good point.

With this new announcement - are they offering a larger trade in credit because you have an extra $5750 worth of sensor?

Probably not.

So I am paying twice, no?

And this is the other part of the frustration. With "all things subject to change" and no definitive release dates, it is very difficult to make any sort of decision.

Jarred says

"The price of the upgrade is $5750 and includes the M-X Sensor and Sensor Board replacement as well as the new upgraded Optical Low Pass Filter. "

Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but I thought that those who upgrade the sensor can keep their R1, but still take advantage of the credit towards Epic-X. Am I wrong? Is there another charge there?

EDIT: Okay, never mind - I was clearly smoking crack. That's the Stage Two option, and it was slated to cost $19,500 plus the cost of the upgrade.

If I'm right, the benefit of the upgrade is that you wind up with two cameras at the end of the day (in addition to getting access to the sensor sooner than the unwashed masses).

Stage three (which I am talking about) is a straight trade in.

$28000 for Epic-X less $17500 credit for trading in my R1. Net payment of $10500.

I have deliberated and decided to be third in line for the new system - but now with M-X sensors being out sooner - that changes the game.

Good point - I'm hopeful that perhaps the trade-in value might be increased... but maybe that's asking too much.

RED has been very generous, so once again I say, I don't want to appear ingrateful.

It is just interesting to hear - out of nowhere - that next week they will start rolling out the new sensors for existing R1's when we are expecting delivery of new cameras.

Based on this new information, I suspect we might be waiting longer than we think for EPIC-X.

Well, maybe if we don't upgrade, they'll have that many extra sensors to go into new cameras sooner :).

Or maybe they are relying on a certain number of upgrades in order to keep production volumes up and lower the averaged cost of these new sensors?

2 vs 3

2 vs 3

There is a feature coming up I'm on that could really use the increased sensitivity. I totally understand your dilemma. I am #759 so who knows when my epic ships but I would probably not be able to hang with the M/X for more than 6 months until my stage 3 comes up. It seems like when they re-sell my red it will be worth more to them if it has the upgrade already. I don't see how it couldn't be. Seems like that makes more sense for them than offering a discount for a camera they are not even getting back. It pretty much seems backwards to reward 2 but not 3 in my book.
