RED ONE M-X upgrade question?

Jim has announced that RED ONE owners will be allowed to upgrade to the M-X sensor before the EPIC or Scarlet ships.

I'm just thinking about logistics (and I know that RED has been great about getting camera's in and out) like with the audio board upgrade program, but does this announcement mean that it's likely that the EPIC and Scarlet program will be delayed?

If so, and enough time goes by, do you think we will be seeing a different sensor in the EPIC by the end of 2010 or early 2011?

If we got the M-X in the REDONE, i'd be in no hurry to get the EPIC with the same sensor (M-X) vs. an EPIC with a larger sensor (??).

I know it's a tricky subject since many things have already been announced....but, we've been trained that "everything is subject to change"

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

David

there are so many options and so many things that will change that there is one option for me now: wait and enjoy my red till the final announcement.

My thinking is that the boards in the Epic will make it so much more appealing even with an equal sensor to the upgraded Red One. Many will want the higher frame rates and other goodies like the handshake between the new features to come in REDCINE-X and the Epic (and Scarlet) exclusive dialogue.

For me, it will be a financial decision only. If possible, I will move to the Epic. If not, I will be satisfied that my camera will still be comparable in some respects.

As for what sensor a delayed Epic might have? Who knows... Nothing would surprise me. They lost the ability to surprise me about a year ago. Now I expect the unexpected.

I hate to speculate, but would you be satisfied with the M-X upgrade for 12 months if you new that you could get and EVEN better EPIC than the current offering.

I know price would be a factor, but I guess I am curious.

I guess I would have to say, and if money were available, that it would in part depend on what I planned on shooting. On second thought, I think it is best to get to the Epic as early as possible, since all one has to do is add a new brain with whatever sensor is newest. Once you are in Epic, your camera is instantly upgradeable.

On the other hand, a RED One with the M-X sensor would have a nice sweet spot. Too many decisions. Maybe someday I'll get drunk and then decide.

Where did Jim say that the RED One M-X update will be released before Epic???? I'm incredibly interested in the update.

You are comparing 2 complete different camera's, frame speeds are one of them for instants.

Happy new Year

What better night than new years eve!

David
:laugh:Oops! Missed my chance.

Actually haven't been drunk in decades... since I learned that the reason for the killer headaches from drinking was because alcohol readily crosses the blood/brain barrier and in some cases (mine) causes the brain to swell.

Okay, that's good news about the RED One updates. Is there any idea when the upgrades will likely begin? The sooner the better, I say.

Thanks.

Stephen

I'm in the same boat, Vinit.

We have a new feature starting in late August. At the very least, I want to shoot it with the an M-X One.

Stephen

I'd upgrade and wait for the newer bodies to come out =)

That'smwhat I'm thinking. I wonder what the pricing structure will be then?

Same as it is now with 4500 for the sensor swap and then what ever EPIC program you choose?

After further review on my own thinking, what will be the policy on trading in a RED One that's had a sensor upgrade for an Epic? If I'm thinking from RED's point of view, I'm saying there is no additional price reduction for the Epic since the upgrader was able to use the sensor for benefit for the time interval between upgrade and release of Epic.

It then becomes possible that one gets a sensor upgrade one month and a few months later is facing whether to trade in their upgraded RED One for a discounted Epic. My understanding is that window to decide closes fairly soon after being contacted by RED.

It could be possible one is paying for a $4500 upgrade that may be useful for only a few months. However, if the aim is to keep the RED one and just buy the discounted Epic, there is no "useful by" date.

Or trade your upgraded RED ONE M-X and have the sensor put into you new EPIC body and have that shipped back. It's like you are renting your M-X sensor in your REDONE until you send it back and get the M-X sensor installed into the EPIC body.

Just a thought.

If they will do that.... Maybe we could get Janne Jansens friend to change the sensor

Yep,

Not sure that is in the works but it would be a nice option. I'm not sure many people were considering the M-X upgrade. But this would be a nice stop gap until EPIC.
