  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Official Post Your DSLR Still Photography Thread

Also from the M645. Can anyone guess who this person is?

I have a couple of Rupert's Mic Pres.... MMMMM Tasty!

Paul, that beach is unbelievable. Is that New Zealand or Australia? Where is it? I wonder if it is warm enough to go for a dip. Exposure looks too perfect in my monitor :) so I might bring mid-gray down a % or two to make it a tad more realistic... then again being so close I shouldn't say anything unless I were sitting in front of a better screen. Great subject and colors for "Dusk Over Metropolis". Have you tried sharpening the city a bit more? Maybe bringing down the very bottom end of the curve for the city a tad further instead of sharpening. I am starting to guess that I am seeing your grade correct, and maybe we just have slightly different taste.
Hi Roberto, thanks for your excellent critique :)

I can't vouch for your browser but if your monitor is calibrated to sRGB like mine is then you are no doubt seeing the same colours I intended, judging by your comments.

But I thought I'd give the two shots you mentioned a few tweaks to see if you like them more. Here are the results:

The Twelve Apostles (along the Great Ocean Road near Melbourne, Australia BTW) I think looks a little too saturated now, but I actually think you were right with the Dusk Over Metropolis shot so I now prefer the B version to the first I posted. Thanks for the impetus to go back to it!

Let me know what you think.

Cheers,

Paul

I appreciate you being so receptive to my opinion, which I submit in the most humble way.

I agree on both counts, I think you are right on.

For The Twelve Apostles saturation does seem very high for this curve, but personally I am all over your original.

I thought your ocean in the original was as good as it gets, truly mesmerizing. The sun facing rocks also felt like they had perfect exposure. I bought the clouds, although a point higher in the mid-low range for the bottom right and a point or two lower saturation in the top section of the open sky might make it perfect for my personal taste. The only other tweak for me might be to the shadows cast by the columns which might be something to adjust individually. That is all that I would do to it, tiny little selective tweaks, and then it might sell to me as 100 real while retaining the stunning effect you achieved with all that detail and the colors in the rest of the image, and your composition which I love. I guess that shadow might then also need a few points lower saturation to balance it as well as you did the rest.

Love what you did to Dusk Over Metropolis! I think you practically nailed it, I might keep it a point higher maybe, but it is impossible to judge that shot further unless I had a perfect monitor with me. I think it really works in the advantage of the composition you created, the volcano being dominant over the city. I wouldn't touch a pixel personally, maybe modify the KFC logo but it looks perfect to me. Great shot.

Paolo, that's a cute little guy.

From August:

From my latest Afghanistan deployment. Took this shot after returning from a mission and performing a blades-turning rapid changeover with the oncoming crew as they took off to save an IED blast victim.

Wasn't able to arrange for a RED this time, but shot some footage on an HD Handycam and a JOBY Gorillapod: [footage link] The Scarlet is going to bring about some amazing opportunities...

Austin, I really like your second drummer. Not only is it a good expression, but everything about the grade and the composition is fantastic. The hell's he got on his head/neck? :)
Medium and small.

He gaff tapes a pair of headphones to his head. Usually by the end of each set he's so sweaty and flails around so much that they continually slide off. He can't seem to keep his head still. :-)

Your photo looks great, by the way. I think the shallow depth works great!

That video is great! Great stories to be told. It actually feels like I'm watching a movie rather than real life. That helicopter mounted shot was pretty special. Very creative.

Great photo. And it seems like that would make for a great documentary. I think it was PBS that had an hour long doc on Afghanistan combat pilots and support crew that was very good, would be interesting to see the medical teams in Afghanistan and challenges bringing modern medicine to an area with so little infrastructure.

Thanks (and thank you ACE for the comment as well). Just got a call this weekend about potentially going back overseas with a dedicated Scarlet based team when it's ready to go. I'm waiting for further details and if it looks like it will be a go, I'll definitely keep you guys posted.
