Hi Guys,
maybe somebody can give some advice please. I was the last 12 years only in Mac world.
I just installed Windows 7 on a 2,6 Ghz quad core pc. Then Redcine, Adobe Premiere Pro and AE CS4 (both testversion). Now I don´t have sound in Redcine, can´t output quicktimes. Do I need to install Quicktime pro? Is there a way to check the Red workflow with Adobe CS4 test version?

Thanks,
and Happy New Year!

Marc

Hey Marc,

Welcome to the wonderful world of the PC geeks and the famous "WFT, do I have to restart my PC again ?"

If you don't have sound in Redcine, well, it's probably Redcine... :wink5:

R3d sound support has always been a problem on PC. The QT output has always been a problem too on PC.

The easiest and most stable way I found : edit on Premiere CS4 with the plugin (which doesn't support the last build btw) but supports sound. And then, to have the maximum bit depth and render stability, use After Effects for the rest (color correction, etc...)

Sure you could color correct with other tools, but you'll be stuck one step or another with DPX/TIF intermediate files if you're 4K full depth, which will require several harddisks before conforming.

The CS4 test version fully works for 30 days.

Happy New Year !

A possibility to write in r3d format (or another one like to red ray one) would be interesting.

Salut Jean-Charles,

thanks for your comments. I really like the Adobe CS4 first touch feeling, but all this surrounding little problems make it very spartanic to work with. So, how could I output from Redcine-X with sync. sound (build 21) 4,5K and then work with it in CS4?
Redcine-X on Mac, Red Alert, Clipfinder and FCP is a much easier workflow...but then, I just don´t like how Apple dictates the hardware I should buy. No e-sata on 15 inch. Laptops, no quadcore Laptops, no blueray....and so on. And always the double price. Shake would be a fantastic Red Software too, but they stopped developping it. That´s why I´m looking for the PC world. It´s maybe the time to do so. And I think CS5 will be a major step.

Happy New Year to you too!

Marc

To output from build 21 on PC with sound, I would recommend the Virtualdub plugin http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=24073
but you won't be able to output higher than 8 bits and only ouput to avi (no qt).

I really think it's better to wait for Adobe or Red to release the updated plugin for CS4 : you won't have then to do intermediate files to edit with CS4.

If you want to batch convert r3d files to QT or another format (not build 21), the best way is to use After Effects and the Red plugin. The most stable workflow on PC, imho.

Another solution : If you want to output to 4.5K with sound, I would output to DPX/TIFS (but only 8 bits, because you can't import 16 bits tiffs or 10 bit dpx into Premiere) with Redcine-X, and output the sound from Virtualdub apart.

Merci,
I will have a look at this workflow.
Finally I would like to work with a DPX workflow with sync. sound.
Cheers,
Marc

I've never had any QT/sound problems and I work with Build 20 footage...strange.
If those factors still arent working for you then Wolfarth's suggestions make sense.
If you have any further trouble like using .R3D's it could just be the trial version. I was having problems with QT/.R3D files when I purchased CS4 because I had the 30 day trial installed beforehand. Tech support led me through a fix that involved eliminating a certain file in the egistry and downloading another version. I believe it was something to do with a component they don't include in the demo because it is licensed from another company...that may be the root of your Adobe problems. As for Redcine sound/qt? Sorry. No idea.

Thank you Eren,
useful information.
IMO not a very good idea from Adobe to give out a non fully working testversion. As far I can see its only possible to work in DV with it, but I can import R3d files now (Build 18), which doesn´t help a lot because my project is build 21, 4,5k. Did you have to install Quicktime Pro for Windows?

Happy New Year!

Marc

You can deal with sound and sync in the editing application seeing as TIFF and DPX do not contain sound as part of their format... Keep it double system until you get into the editing applications.

Michael, I realised I can export a quicktime DV file -lowest resolution, quality- out of Redcine-X for sound. Altough sound isn´t working in Redcine its included in the exported file. This file I take for sound, going back to Redcine and export DPX or Tiff files. Right? Is there a shortcut to get the sound extracted? Open the qt proxies doesn´t work.
Thanks,
HNY:cheers2:

Marc,

The best solution, in my opinion, to extract the audio tracks, is to use Virtualdub (you can set up all the sample rates/codec/etc)

You don't need QT Pro : QT Pro allows you to edit a little bit QT files, save them, reencode them, add other tracks, etc... you can do all this with an editing app.

You can't work with QT proxies on PC, as Red never released the QT plugin.

Thst's what I keep saying all day long : as a camera manufacturer, when you release a new build, you have to offer at the same time a possibility to edit/batch convert/etc what you've recorded.

The Redcince-X will probably do the job, but it needs to be finished

Take care, though, of the color depth : you can't import 16bits TIFFs or 10 bits DPX into PRemiere Pro, only 8 bits (see my post in the same section)

OK, I have to go, there's a "new" episode of Starsky and Hutch on tv, and I like the girls of the 70s :wink5:

Merci,
this worked!
8bit DPX are enough right now. Anyway if I buy Premiere Pro I wait until CS5.
Windows is much better for storing. Much easier Raid solutions/ LTO etc. But I miss Red Alert/Clipfinder/and a stable Redcine-X. Hope CS5 will all change (or I´m going back to Mac).
Cheers,

Marc

Oh, yes, CS5 will change a lot. I don't know if i can say it, but After effects CS5 handles .R3D beatifully well, build 21 included. Fast!! That's all :lipsrsealed:

Santiago,
can I get CS5 beta to test somewhere? Does it work with 4,5K ? New color science?
Thanks,
Marc

Good idea John,
but which "modules" should I ask for?
During testing I found Sony Vegas Pro 9.0. Is this a joke? First software I can load 4,5 K build 21 and it works right from the start! Not really a CC solution, but the simplicity of the workflow and the support for R3d files is incredible. And it works with sound. That´s what I expected from Premiere CS4. Never thought before of Vegas as a pro solution.
