One step closer to a FOSS Red workflow. This should be helpful once I get my scarlet.

From what I can see on the link, the plug in truncates the 48bpp data down to 24bpp for VirtualDub,
Quote: [Decoding is supported to RGB color representations only: 16 bit RGB (555) 16 bit RGB (565) 24 bit RGB (888) 32 bit RGB (888) (dummy alpha channel) Redcode images are decoded at 16 bits per channel, but since VirtualDub can only handle 8 bits per channel at its best, the lower bits are simply shaved off, significantly reducing output color resolution. This is fine for creating proxies and intermediates, but not optimal for online color corrections or finishing.] Not 48 bit RGB 16,16,16. So it would be most useful for extracting the Audio from the R3D files and making a fast workprint. For use with my programs you could use it to make BMP frames for editing, but you will get histogram gaps if you do much color correction from 8x3bit data, you really need to use REDCINE to get 16x3bit files, well 12x3 into 16x3 since the camera is 12bit raw data. The link indicates the R3D plugin is dropping the bottom bits from the 24bit audio to get 16bit audio...

amazing, it actually works. I can view R3D on my completely antiquated PC with no special video cards or anything else... very cool!

Wow! Thank you, Gábor!
I was really hoping someone would do this, but I didn't expect it so quickly. I wonder if the SDK will support a direct-to-8-bit decoding in the future.

The Red SDK license does not permit the SDK source code to be distributed, or even your own code if it uses their headers, so any open-source tools can't use it directly. There may be some workaround, but any R3D module would not be directly in FFMPEG, at least as I understand it.

I love this -
Is there a 64-bit version available? No, and it's not even planned. The SDK is 32-bit only at the moment, and I don't have a 64-bit environment for testing, so there. |

Very good plugin. Well done.
It is much easier to have *.avi files for offline now. One question have rised. When I do render out it only uses 30% of processor power. We have Scultrail wit 8 cores here. From 2K we corvert at arround 5.5fps and only two cores have been seriusly used. But we are able to launch several VirtualDubs at once and with 4 of those we get processor usage about 95% and all are converting at about 5.5fps. WinXP Pro SP3 here. Used codec: Matrox Axo 50Mbit MPEG-2 I-frame avi. Do others have the same? Is there a way to speed up just one VirtualDub? Regards Priit |
